Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

Czestochowa Europe » Poland
Our pilgrimage to Poland ended with a trip to the Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa, Europe’s most famous shrine. The shrine gets its fame from the icon of the Black Madonna which has been the source of numerous miracles. The origin of the icon is unknown but one legend says that Saint Luke the Evangelist painted the portrait on a table made by Jesus himself. Saint Helena discovered the image while in Jerusalem searching for the Holy Cross and took it home to Constantinople where it would remain for the next five hundred years. In 803 the image was given [View Full Entry]

JPII's House Europe » Poland
Day 2 in Poland began with a visit to John Paul II’s house in Wadowice, Poland. It was amazing to see the place where JPII spent the first eighteen years of his life, the years that laid the ground work for the person he would become. (There’s a thought, I walked around on the same ground as JPII did during the years of his formation). We also got to see the Basilica right next to his house where he was an altar server and I have to say it was one of my favorite churches because it was so cute. This [View Full Entry]

Auschwitz Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Auschwitz
I’ve read about it in books and watched it in movies but nothing can compare to the reality of being there. I don’t even know where to begin writing about the experience. The day I spent at Auschwitz is something that will take a lifetime to process. It put an entirely new dimension on something that I have heard about my entire life. When I walked out of the camp that day any doubt that something like that could have actually happened was removed from my mind. But it wasn’t so much like I ever doubted it, it was just that [View Full Entry]

Not the greatest day Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Auschwitz
So I dont' know if I should blame today's events on being wiped out from last night, or lack of speaking Polish, or the possibility that my charades skills are fading--gasp!!! not that! It's my lifeline. Anyways, so I'm heading out to Auschwitz (largest concentration camp) by train. I bought a ticket. The lady asked if i wanted return ticket and i said yes. I am on my way. SO i check the schedule and head to platform 2 where the train is. Except, there are two platform 2's. And both of them have trains on them. One of them is [View Full Entry]

Krakow, Poland Europe » Poland » Lesser Poland » Kraków
Poland has never been a place I’ve really wanted to go to; in all honesty I’ve given it very little thought and had low expectations when I did actually go. I wasn’t surprised that when we arrived in Krakow it was foggy and dreary, but in spite of how it started Poland surprised me. I can’t say it was a really fun trip, it was more of several life changing experiences piled into one weekend. We were constantly in motion moving from Krakow to the Divine Mercy Shrine to Auschwitz and then to Czestochowa. We were so busy that if lunch [View Full Entry]

After our visit to Krakow we headed to the Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Lagiewiniki, Poland. The Shrine of the Divine Mercy is where St. Faustina lived when she had several apparitions. I want to say she had somewhere around 72 apparitions, but I could be wrong on that one, it was a lot though. All of her apparitions are contained in her diary (The Diary of Saint Faustina). In one apparition Christ revealed to her the image of the Divine Mercy and taught her how to pray the Divine Mercy chaplet. The Divine Mercy chaplet is a devotion that [View Full Entry]

Everytime you arrive in a new country its a bit challenging to get oriented. Especially when the language resembles Japanese more than English. A's have curly cues on them and actually sometimes I think they forget to add vowels. hmm. Anyways, after a quick nap from my 530 am arrival, I headed out to see the town. I love it here. Like Germany, everyone is beautiful. And surprisingly, for as little English as any one in the train station spoke (0 words), everyone around town is sooo helpful and really fluent. SO great. After a little self guided tour, I sat [View Full Entry]

La carte postale Europe » Poland » Pomerania » Ustka
Salut!

Arriving in Krakow, Brase and I were still making our multiple daily offerings to the porcelain gods. Luckily, we finally found a pharmacy which gave us the pills to begin curing our affliction. Sadly, the cruelty of the porcelain gods prevented us from enjoying this city as much as we could have. [View Full Entry]

C'est la vie... Europe » Poland » Pomerania » Ustka
