Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

Polish Jaunts with John Europe » Poland » Masovia » Warsaw
Goodness Gracious me... talk about going out with a bang!!! Last Thursaday Lisa and I went to the health club and then out for lunch. As I have already mentioned - I love being in her company. I would not have been able to contemplate going to see dad in Poland if I did not have such a welcome invite from Lisa to return to their home in Datchet. She listenens to my babble in a contemplative almost Solomonic way which I find terribly endearing. The only other people that listen to me like that are Mel and Deborah, and they [View Full Entry]

24 October Nice day of rest at Krzystof's house. Enjoyed the afternoon with Krzystof's dad and tasted some delicious, home-made soup. Some things were lost in translation, however, as Fiona and Marcus attempted to compliment Mr Piskorski on the food using a small Polish-English dictionary. Somehow, we said that the food tasted "30"; that our travels were "windy" (trying to describe fish we had tried!); and asked Mr Piskorski if he actually lived in the house. The latter confusion arose because the house address coincides with Biskupin, which we had visited earlier. It was a fun experie [View Full Entry]

We are having an amazing time in Poland thanks to Krzysztof and his father. Krzysztof and Marcus were house-mates in Oxford 2001-02, when Marcus was working on his masters there. We are grateful for the Piskorski's generous hospitality. These are just a few highlights of our experinces in Poland so far. We have seen so much in such a few days. It is safe to assume that we have sampled and savored many kinds of sausages, pierogi, breads, cheeses, soups, crepes, beer and liquors every day! We stop often to see the Gothic brick cathedrals and churches. Evidence of Poland's devotion [View Full Entry]

When we decided to go to Poland, we didn't really know what to expect. However we were pleasantly surprised with how awesome and beautiful Poland actually is. But don't mess with the Polish Police. Because if you put your feet on the train seat, they just might take all your Zlotl (cash). [View Full Entry]

Hey folks! First of all sorry for the lack of blog-age the last couple of days. Drama struck just like in an episode of diagnosis murder- except there was no dancing from Dick van Dyke. Since i (sam) came to Warsaw id had a bit of tummy ache- thought is was probably a dodgy kebab which dan is so fond of. However a day or so later i got really bad back pain. Anyways to cut a long story short i went to the doctors who transferred me to hospital (in a lil ambulance). I had xrays ultra sounds, some doc [View Full Entry]

Ola peeps! Glad you liked the photos. Thought we'd let you see some more while we have the ability! Had an exceedingly nice day yesterday, pehaps inspired by the glorious weather. Discussed the finer points of the famous composer "Chop-in" with Ben, persuaded him that the Polish beer Zywiec is pronounced "six" and I myself (Dan) uttered the words-"sorry I dont speak foreign" to an innocent Polish woman asking for change. Apparently I also laughed in a nuns face but I do not agree entirely with this. Apart from that we had a lovely walk around 'old town' which was completely [View Full Entry]

Hi from poland! It's Warsaw today after a 6 hour train ride from the german capital. Yesterday we rounded off our Berlin sightseeing, visiting the Olympiastadion, host of the 1936 Olympics and designed by Hitler. I'd nagged Sam and Dan since we arrived in Berlin that we should go there as it's the ground of Hertha Berlin a German footy team and holds 85,000 people - Ben (footy geek) Also carried on our tradition of going up things - despite Dan's fear of heights - went up the enormous TV tower and the Reichstag. First impressions of Warsaw are good, looks [View Full Entry]

Zakopane--land of Beauty Europe » Poland
Yesterday I caught the bus down to Zakopane, Poland. It's kinda like Tahoe...total ski town with hiking in the summer. So beautiful. And not to mention land of cows on a leash. What the? Yeah I didn't know either. I did see a few sheep on a leash too. So after I got there, I went to the tourist information place to get info on where to hike. So with my trusty pedometer on my wrist I did a couple quick hikes. Much to my surprise, I clocked over 12 miles! And that included one mountain pass. Going on these hikes [View Full Entry]
