Poland is an ancient nation that was conceived near the middle of the 10th century. Its golden age occurred in the 16th century. During the following century, the strengthening of the gentry and internal disorders weakened the nation. In a series of agreements between 1772 and 1795, Russia, Prussia, and Austria partitioned Poland amongst themselves. Poland regained its independence in 1918 only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in World War II. It became a Soviet satellite state following the war, but its government was comparatively tolerant and progressive. Labor turmoil in 1980 led to the formation of the independent trade union "Solidarity" that over time became a political force and by 1990 had swept parliamentary elections and the presidency. A "shock therapy" program during the early 1990s enabled the country to transform its economy into one of the most robust in Central Europe, but Poland currently suffers low GDP growth and high unemployment. Solidarity suffered a major defeat in the 2001 parliamentary elections when it failed to elect a single deputy to the lower house of Parliament, and the new leaders of the Solidarity Trade Union subsequently pledged to reduce the Trade Union's political role. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. To be updated

Today I was supposed to go with a boy from Monar to see his school and meet his class. was looking forward to it but unfortunately the school has exams going on and the visit was not possible. so as there was no other work I decided to make the trip to Malbork Castle. This i situated in Malbork near Gadansk. I won't dwell into the history of the castle. The link is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malbork. In short the castle is supposedly the largest Gothic style fortress in Europe. Built in 1274 by the knights of the Teutonic Order. The castle is built [View Full Entry]

Easter Weekend  Europe » Poland » Pomerania » Gdansk
Easter weekend in Poland is Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter sunday and Easter Monday. - Good Friday attended mass at the local church. It was really packed and cold but the service was nice. Though I missed the sung gospel like in India. I also helped with the decorations. Remember I mentioned about cutting the easter shrubs from the forest? well same stuff was used. I decorated the drawing room. and made like an arch over the doorwaty. everyone was impressed and really liked it. also it made me happy. Lot of pain is taken to decorate for Eater its like [View Full Entry]

More complaining. Don't read if you're offended by mild to medium profanities. :-/ * * * I've started to resent the house I live in. From here on out, "they" refer to my hosts. They only use one garbage can and it's the one in the kitchen. It's always full, sometimes overflowing, and it's most disgusting when the baby's dirty diapers are in there. Today the whole place smelled like rotten food b/c they had 2 sacks of garbage just sitting there. In the kitchen sink, there are always dirty dishes, coffee cups, pots, pan (there is only one pan), baking [View Full Entry]

(This is going to be boring for most of you, i'm cateloging two meals in two days) I had very little food when I began my Auschwitz day yesterday. A few spoonfuls of left over pasta, a drink, some pretzels, and then a stick of Halvah (chałwa in Polish!). Then off I went. While at the Auschwitz Museum I had a few chances to buy snackies but everything was marked up and I was too cheap, so I opted to wait until I got back to Krakow before eating again. I was sooo hungry while riding the bus (this sounds familiar...) [View Full Entry]

I bought the bus ticket for 9.30 but I missed the bus by almost 30 minutes. This happens a lot, I keep having to rebook tickets, be it plane, bus, or train. I caught the 10.30 bus instead, which was so full that some people stood for the whole ride, and arrived at the Auschwitz Museum a bit after noon. The entry was free, but to join the English speaking tour cost 26 zl. Everytime I join a tour, I end up regretting it, and today was no different. The tour guide lady was very nice and knew everything, but we [View Full Entry]

Well, I have to say, I'm making slow progress here. Slowly making progress? Which sounds better?? Everyday when I learn a new thing (or new things), I think -- dang it, why didn't I know this earlier! For instance, we learned about how to do time sequences two days ago: How to say, for example,"first I wake up, then I brush my teeth". And something "in morning", something "at noon", something "in the after noon", and something "in the evenings". Had I known this stuff a few days earlier, I could've perhaps potentially possibly likely asked for the proper train/bus [View Full Entry]

I heard my lips uttering something I never thought possible: "I'm sad that it's the end of winter." Madness? Perhaps. But until now I had never experienced the mad rush of snowboarding. It's my new favourite thing to do and I wish I could send myself to a slope right now. Eight of us went to Poland to ski and snowboard. Zakopane is the main centre for snow sports in Poland and is about two hours south of Krakow and the mountains there mark the border with Slovakia. We were a bit of a rabble with very tenuous connections linking us [View Full Entry]
