It is amazing that we are already half way through the week. In addition to our assignments on the jobsite, we have experienced a lot of the culture of Gliwice. As we bus to the jobsite, we see locals going to work, potential drivers practicing at the local driving school, and students enjoying their last days as summer break comes to a close.
We have mixed and hauled, spread and smoothed, laid and leveled, measured and cut, sanded and fitted, and even came up with all kinds of other tasks to get our jobs done today. It's more of the same, but we're enjoying the work!
Yesterday afternoon, a reporter from the local newspaper came to interview Anna Czyz, Chuck & Terri and Andrea. Published today, the article is titled, 'Americans prefer working on build site to vacationing on the beach' and features a photo of Fred as well as comments from Anna, Chuck, Terri & Andrea. The reporter asked several times, "Why do you come here?" It's difficult for Polish people to understand our concept of volunteerism and the benefits we receive from participating. We explained that seeing a need and working as a team to meet it gives us great satisfaction and fulfillment. As a Christian-based organization partnership, Thrivent Builds / Habitat for Humanity provides us great opportunities to do that.
Some of the team enjoyed a guided walking tour of Gliwice and learned much about its history. Others of our group took the opportunity to shop for souvenirs and keepsakes from our visit. The local restaurants provide a wide range of choices, and we're enjoying sampling every one of them.
