I volunteered for computer lab duty this afternoon so that I could update and catch up on e-mails. Yesterday was a completelly fun day. After classes in the morning the American staff (there are about 20 of us) took the train into the city of Gdansk where we could spend the rest of the afternoon. Once we got to Gdansk, I went of with a group of four others. Emily (my TA who is actually really annoying), Jennifer, Joanna and Peter. Joanna and Peter are brother and sister and both speak fluent Polish. We started off the day by going to the top of the tallest brick church in Europe. It was easily 1,000 steps to the top walkiing up this narrow winding staircase. The view was amzing at the top. After we went over to ... read more

Finally, I found a computer where I can get to update this. The computers in our dorm block the website. I will start using the computers in our lab to post. Unfortuantely, no pictures since I still can't find a computer with a usb. It has been a lot of fun so far. During the day we get to hang out with the students. They just have so many questions about Americans. Sometimes it's funny, like trying to teach baseball. They did not really understand the rules about how to run the bases or where to throw the ball when you're in the field. And I had never realized how hard it is to teach something that to me is just understood to someone who has never tryed to play. Most of the students are really ... read more

So here is a map of Poland with a marker of where I will be: Still just playing around with this site and trying to remember HTML coding. It's too bad I skipped that class about building a website senior year in high school so often. Mighty Taco for lunch was a way better choice at the time though. Is there anyone who knows how to put this text under the picture Is there anyone who knows how to get the text underneath the picture instead of to the side? ... read more

Our next stop on the Poland trip took us all the way to the northern coast and the city of Gdansk. The city is an important Polish port and is the location of the famous Lenin shipyards where the Solidarity movement began. Lech Walesa worked here as an electrician in the 1970s and in 1980, he helped form Solidarnosc as a trade union to combat communism in Poland. We had nice weather and walked throughout the old part of the city which, like a lot of the larger ones in Poland, was bombed and suffered a lot of damage. It is quite sad to see and read about all of the wonderful old sights in these cities that were destroyed during World War II. Fortunately, most cities were quite proactive about reconstructing damaged buildings in their ... read more

It’s always a bit of a shock when the alarm goes off at 6.00 when one is on holiday. Having said that, I bounded out of bed this morning and threw open the curtains of my room. For the first time ever, I was behind the Iron Curtain and I wanted to see what it looked like. So far, it looked like every other port I have ever been to - with one significant difference. The docks were lined with people who had come out at that ungodly hour of the morning to see the ship. Not only were we coming in, but a German boat called the Aida was coming in as well. I would say that those people got their zlotys worth this morning. What is a zloty, I hear you asking? It is ... read more

So this was the beginning of my week trip with my Marine Biology class to Hel and Gdansk Poland. Our trip was from March 9th-14th. After a late night of wine and painting with some paints we got from Tiger, which is a great store filled with cheap useless things haha, it was time to get up and go to the airport. This nice thing here is you can just hop on the metro and it takes you straight to the airport, almost literally inside of it. And the metro trains don't have any drivers, so it's like being on a roller coaster because the front of it is all glass so you can see into the tunnel. So you always see all the children and tourists up in the front seats, its pretty funny. Anyway, ... read more

I ended up in poland just as spring was really starting to hit eastern Europe which was a good change. First, I headed up to Gdansk to visit my friend Marta who lives up there. Gdansk is in right on the Baltic Coast and is where the first shots of WWII were fired (Just thought you needed to know that little fact). I played tourist for a day while Marta was working and then on the following day we went into the country to see the sights and do some hiking. On our little adventure we went to a few small towns walked around a lake or two and even went to a odd kind of museum which you will have to see the photos of (I even saw a Guiness Record Desk!!! I know). From ... read more

Gdansk will be among the venues when Poland and Ukraine host football’s 2012 European Championship. A charming city it may be, but there is much work to do before it is ready for an influx of foreign visitors on such a huge scale. The first thing you notice on arrival in Gdansk, which along with its smaller neighbours Gdynia and Sopot makes up the Tri-City area on Poland’s Baltic coast, is the lack of infrastructure. There is no rail service to take passengers from the small airport to the city centre and the only road is a single lane, potholed strip which twice a day fails to cope with the rush hour traffic. I visited with three friends, including two brothers whose grandparents fled to England when the Poles re-took what was then the German city ... read more
