This morning in Toruń was a walking tour of the old town. As I mentioned, Toruń was Monika's home, so she was an excellent guide. The group again assembled at the Monastery Gate. The plaza between the gate and the river is Naval School Square (Skwer Oficerskiej Szkoły Marynarki Wojennej). (The Polish naval academy was located in Toruń in 1921-1938 and housed in the barracks that is now the Hotel Bulwar.) Upon entering the gate this time, we turned to the left. Now we were on the inside of the city wall we passed walking from the hotel. The Leaning Tower at a corner of the city wall leans out over the hotel parking lot. Inside the wall it takes the form of a four story residential building. Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) was born in Toruń and ... read more

It was an interesting drive north from Poznań to Toruń, passing through Paczkowo with its rustic railway station, Gniezno with its twin towered church, and then Pierzyska for a highway rest stop. A Polish Army airfield appeared at Inowrocław. Upon crossing the Vistula (Wisła) River we arrived in Toruń around 4:30 p.m. The Hotel Bulwar was a renovated and modernized 19th century Prussian military barracks (Kaserne). (Toruń was under German dominion from the Second Partition in 1793 to 1918.) Directly across from the hotel were the remains of the the town walls. The 14th century Leaning Tower (Krzywa Wieża) loomed over the parking lot. Toruń was founded by the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century. Toruń has been famous as a center for making gingerbread, or piernik, since the 13th century. An attraction in town is ... read more

We took the train from Warsaw's rather grand Central station to Torun, a journey of just over two and a half hours. Torun was a place I had never heard of and so we were surprised when our friends put it on the agenda. It was about halfway between Warsaw and our next destination, Gdansk, and we are so pleased that this decision had been made for us. What a fantastic city to visit. I'd like to say there were fewer tourists but I can't. It was a public holiday in Poland and the place was packed with Polish tourists. Oh well, you can never win! A taxi took us over the River Vistual and dropped us right outside the Hotel Spirchz, just inside the old city gates. What a great choice of hotel this was. ... read more

We knew it was too good to be true and yes the sun of yesterday had deserted us,at least for the morning. Not that it mattered as we have a reasonable distance to travel by car south to Torun and perhaps by the time we get there the sun will be out again. Breakfast was the same as yesterday with the three nationalities represented and conversation limited to our individual groups. We would have to say this has been the only disappointing feature of our stay here as it is always good to converse with locals and fellow travellers from afar and we have in the past been able to at least get some conversation from others around us at breakfast. We took the R1 on a virtually direct run south travelling through countryside that has become very ... read more

The concensus is to head off about 1pm today to give us enough time to get to Turon where the Polish leg of the Speedway Grand Prix is being held (albeit the meeting starts at 7pm and we're not sure what there is to do in Turon), so we potter about in our room until it’s time to leave. I can tell Greg is nervous about the rain in case the meeting gets rained off, and keeps optimistically saying he can see chinks of blue sky in the distance. Hmmmm, if you say so. For a place which is smaller than Bydgoszcz, Turon has all the charm and hustle and bustle of somewhere a lot bigger. After a brief check of the stadium and then a look around a massive shopping mall next door (where Greg ... read more

Home of Nicholas Conpernicus. We toured his house. Very lovely old town. Almost free of any devastation from WWII Not far from the villages of Great grandparents on mom's side. I'll attempt to rent a car on Saturday and make the 23 mile journey one way to the village. It is Mother's day in Poland tomorrow. See the lovely roses and how they wrap them in the thin grass. 10zl or about $2.85 cents US! Everything is so cheap here. A Pint of ale is like $1.40 US. You can order a large pizza for about $5... read more

July 22 - The snoring wasn't so bad last night. He reined it in somehow, or I slept through it better. Either way, that was good. I got up around 7am and finished packing, had some breakfast and left around 8:30 am for the train station. Fortunately one of the guys working at the hostel was really helpful and had printed me the train schedule, so I knew what to ask for and when the trains would go to Torun. I also knew I had to change trains and where to do that. If I had just gone to the train station I don't think I would have had that information as it wasn't printed on my ticket. I chose te 9:45am train over the 8:15 because it was faster and would give me more time ... read more

Torun, 24-07-2001. Torun surely has charm, a soul reaching touch of clasic admosphere that breaches the charactre of this ancient realm of the Teutonic Knights, small cobble-stoned streets overshadowed by mighty churches which ghotic appaerance makes me feel small and insignificant... A ring of powerfull looking walls surrounding the inner city is testomony of my first visit to this ancient place. A light rain drizzling down on my head while I push my overloaded iron lady through near-empty streets, my sweaty and rained upon head trying to make an owl's turning, trying hard to take it all in. The omnimous darkness of the thunderstorm as yet awaiting me ignoring, I look for a small bar for lunch...back to tasteless Polish froth that the locals gobble down like it is a bowl of Red Wine with the ... read more
