We all had a good sleep last night. I was up late typing out the blog entry for yesterday. I still have photos to load up to the site when we’re in wi-fi next. This morning’s post is about our ‘frokost’ (breakfast). We mentioned it before, but I snuck down early enough to snap some photos of the breakfast offerings for you all to see. Breakfast this morning did not disappoint. Be sure to check out the photos to see what was being offered. It was the best breakfast set up Shelley and I have ever seen in our travels. Seriously good all around.... read more

Shelley, Kristine, and I set off from Bergen in our rental car after a sumptuous breakfast (see previous post). We are on the E16 from Bergen to Stegastein Viewpoint and then back down to stay overnight in Flåm. I’m typing now in the car as Shelley is driving. We’ve driven through tunnels and beside towering mountains. Fast moving streams filled with fresh water cascade over the many levels of rocks - reminds me of British Columbia and some of the roadways up Between Hope and Cache Creek. The scenery is stunning and the roads are very well maintained. The average speed is 70 km/h and sometimes 80 km/h. It’s slower when you’re going through little towns or coming up on one of the many traffic circles used here for traffic. Arriving in Flåm we had to ... read more

The three of us woke up from a night full of sleep. Shelley was the first to get ready and headed down to the lobby for breakfast. Kristine and I tagged along not too long afterwards. Breakfast was AWESOME!! I have to say, for the both of us, that this was the BEST breakfast we’ve ever had in ANY hotel we’ve ever stayed in thus far. There were eggs, loafs of fresh baked bread we had to cut to size ourselves, yoghurt of various kinds, fruit, cheeses, smoked salmon, turkey sausages with onions, meatballs, mushrooms with spinach, fresh cut and fried potatoes, jams, cereals, juices….I can’t even remember how much variety they had. Cold cuts, miniature smoothies…I should capture this on a video tomorrow. We’re already looking forward to breakfast tomorrow. After breakfast we walked about ... read more

This morning we leave Kongsberg to head to the Dale of Norway Factory and Outlet. This is something on my bucket list. For the time I was growing up, I was wearing Norwegian sweaters sent over for me from Norway. My farmor had friends who knitted sweaters for me, and some were bought. As an adult, I was able to buy my own. Dale is one of the good brands in the sweater market and I really like the many patterns and colours available. I’m very excited to be heading there this morning. It will be about a 5 - 1/2 hr drive to get there. Then, it will be a short drive south to Bergen where we are staying for that night and the next day/evening. The drive to Dale from Kongsberg was beautiful AND ... read more

This was a full day for us in Kongsberg. We enjoyed a wonderful breakfast of breads, cheese, jam, caviar, vegetables, coffee….delicious. After getting ready, we went for a little hike up behind Elisabeth’s house. The area is called Håvet. There are trails and fields and a local road that leads to a place called “The Crowns in Håvet”. From Wikipedia: This attraction (Kronene i Håvet) is a site where Norwegian royal monograms have been carved into the mountainside overlooking Kongsberg to mark royal visits to the city. In June 1704 King Frederik IV visited Kongsberg and started a tradition that is still celebrated. King Frederik also arranged for the monograms of visits from earlier monarchs to be recorded as well. The first monogram on the hillside property belonged to Christian IV who in 1624 founded Kongsberg at ... read more

Hilde drove Shelley, Kristine, and I to the shopping mall located near the Avis Rental company. We went to the mall so the two ladies could purchase a hair dryer with the proper plug connection for Norway. We ended up buying a couple other items…I was able to find a ‘lefse’ rolling pin, and another cutter for making fattigman. I also managed to find a cheese protector for my Norwegian cheese. Very happy camper here. We then made our way to the car rental place where we picked up our rental car. It drives pretty nice; comfortable and sturdy enough. Has most of the comforts one would want. It’s a hybrid too, so that will help with the fuel purchasing. Arriving in Kongsberg, we knocked on Elisabeth’s door and there she was!! So nice to be ... read more

Cruise Barcelona to Amsterdam via the North Cape of Norway, May 4-28 THERE IS A PROBLEM, PHOTOS WILL NOT UPLOAD TO THE BLOG SITE SO I AM POSTING THIS BEFORE I LEAVE FOR PNG TOMORROW AND WILL TRY AND ADD THE PHOTOS AS SOON AS I CAN. I HAD THIS PROBLEM ONCE BEFORE AND THE NEXT DAY IT WORKED AS NORMAL. IT ACCEPTED 5 FOR SOME REASON🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ This trip was a last minute decision when it became clear that the house hunt in Worcester was not going to happen as planned. So I jumped aboard a Holland America ship, the Nieuw Statendam, a pinnacle class ship which is HALs largest and newest class. I didn’t think I would blog as I wasn’t expecting the destinations to be too exciting but hopefully the trip would give me ... read more

Today was the day for us to head in to Oslo. In the morning, Henning and Hilda were having some work done on the outside of the house and an electrician was coming by to start some of that work. Shelley was able to get her shower in on time, and my sister Kristine was next. She got into the shower, started the water, was able to get wet, and just when she reached for the soap, the electrician cut off the water supply to the house! Ooops! Ultimately, she was able to use the shower next door at the neighbour’s place. Not too long after, we got on our way to Oslo. Siw-Linda, Hilde, Kristine, Shelley, and I walked from Hilde’s place to catch the bus from Snarøya to Oslo. A quick little ride was ... read more

God dag, god dag…! It’s 5 o‘ clock in the morning and I’m up and outside to experience the sunlight. It helps greatly to start adjusting one’s body to the time zone difference. It’s a fresh, cool, and crisp morning. it is 8° outside going up to a high of 16° later this afternoon. Shelley is still in bed. Her quote to me? “I’m staying in bed since you kept me up all night.” “I did?” I asked. “Yes, you did….your snoring was terrible.” 😔 I didn’t hear a thing…. Today we will be having some breakfast and then we will all be heading out on Henning’s boat to sail around Oslo harbour and see some sites.... read more

After a lovely breakfast prepared by Hilde, we set off with Henning on his boat to enjoy a view of Oslo from the water. We set sail from Snarøya to sail in the Oslo Fjord. Henning, Ørjan, Oda, Shelley, Kristine, and I set off for the fjord. On the way there, we saw the USS Harry Truman leaving the harbour after a visit. We sailed in the waters of the fjord and then Henning received a text from a friend of his who was moored at anchor close by who forgot to bring enough water. He wanted to make some coffee. So, we came alongside his boat and tied up with him. Oda (Hilde’s niece) decided to go in for a swim. I thought that was a good idea too, but I had no swim trunks. ... read more
