the site of the first heavy water production plant
28 Sep

Minus 1C when we got up this morning. We first went to the site where heavy water was first produced and was the scene of major sabotage efforts to prevent the German scientific community getting hold of it. It is now a museum and very interesting. It is set in a valley that is so steep and narrow that as of the 25th of this month the sun does not get above the hill line so the valley does not see the sun again until the 12th of March which is the cause for a big celebration. We headed back to Oslo, put the washing on and then headed off to see the big ski jump. We got an elevator part way up the tower and then heaps of steps up to the top which doubles as a viewing tower. Great views over Oslo but as you can see in the photo’s dirty windows. Bodil and I walked back to their house, all downhill and it is interesting walking at these low temperatures where you really don’t get all sweaty. We are off again tomorrow, back again to Schiphol and then Beijing.
