Background: Two centuries of Viking raids into Europe tapered off following the adoption of Christianity by King Olav TRYGGVASON in 994. Conversion of the Norwegian kingdom occurred over the next several decades. In 1397, Norway was absorbed into a union with Denmark that was to last for more than four centuries. In 1814, Norwegians resisted the cession of their country to Sweden and adopted a new constitution. Sweden then invaded Norway but agreed to let Norway keep its constitution in return for accepting the union under a Swedish king. Rising nationalism throughout the 19th century led to a 1905 referendum granting Norway independence. Although Norway remained neutral in World War I, it suffered heavy losses to its shipping. Norway proclaimed its neutrality at the outset of World War II, but was nonetheless occupied for five years by Nazi Germany (1940-45). In 1949, neutrality was abandoned and Norway became a member of NATO. Discovery of oil and gas in adjacent waters in the late 1960s boosted Norway's economic fortunes. The current focus is on containing spending on the extensive welfare system and planning for the time when petroleum reserves are depleted. In referenda held in 1972 and 1994, Norway rejected joining the EU.

There was a Nobel Peace Center on the main Street, but I found this Institute in a different part of the city.
So I arrived into Oslo yesterday around 5. First thing I noticed walking off of the plane was that it felt like I was in Alberta. Spruce trees, green hills and a stiff breeze that makes one think snow is near even though it's August. Second thing I noticed at the airport, was the ease at going through customs. Hello. Passport stamp. Thank You. No questions asked. I'm sure I'll pay dearly when arriving home in Canada for the swiftness I got here. After I got my bags I made my way to the entry area of the airport. I hadn't [View Full Entry]

So after 3 or 4 days in Amsterdam, plus an evening in Rotterdam (went to the famous Kinderdyjk windmills near there; there are 19 all in a clustered area, and a world heritage site), Cheryl and I boarded the MS Rotterdam (in Rotterdam, ha ha!) on Monday. Yesterday was a sea day; first stop was today and we are currently in Oslo--sorta plain city but saw a famous statue park devoted to a late Oslo artist named Vigeland... he only sculpted people and all of them are naked. My favorite was the fetus statue, it was upside-down and curled up and [View Full Entry]

Chelsea and Tim
Chelsea and Tim
Over looking Oslo.
God Dag! (good day) Chelsea and I are now in Oslo, Norway staying with one of my dad's second cousins, Tim. We had a pretty good trip here (one hour delay getting out of Dublin, but oh well!). So far Norway strikes me as very similar to the Pacific Northwest. Rugged terrain, lots of mountains and lakes, and saltwater fjords like the Puget Sound. Oslo is a great city to visit, easy to navigate and it offers lots to see and do. Dang, it is expensive though!!! Everything costs about double compared to the US. Tim drove us up to a [View Full Entry]

Oslo day 2

Gokstadskipen
Gokstadskipen
A very sea worthy vessel, this is what the Vikings would have used to reach Iceland, Greenland, and Newfoundland!
Today we had quite the adventure getting into the city! We were trying to follow directions from my relative Tim, but we got confused on the bus to go to the Viking Ship museum and the Norwegian Folk Museum. At one point we asked a bus driver for help, and she pulled the bus over to talk to us (with about a half dozen other people on it!) and even involved 2 other passengers while trying to figure out how we should get there. It was quite the scene! Needless to say we got off that bus quickly, embarrassed about holding [View Full Entry]

The view at the start of the valley as the train began to snake uphill
By the end of our fjord trip I think we'd already fallen for Norway, so expectations were high for the next leg of our tour - and we weren't disappointed. Our trip started at sea level in the small town of Flam. Once a small port, and now Norway distilled in a disneyland style, Flam is not a place to stop long, and we were glad we hadn't stayed there for the night. There can't have been a soul there who wasn't a tourist or a waitress. Having seen enough, we quickly jumped on the train, and enjoyed what must be [View Full Entry]

This past week has been a busy week! On Tuesday morning we woke up to pouring rain in Bergen. We took the bus to the train station to catch our train to Voss. This was the first leg of Norway in a Nutshell, a popular tour of Norway. In Voss we caught a bus to Gudvangen. We traveled along the winding road in the rain. We passed numerous waterfalls and drove down a switchback road to the bottom of the fjord. There we boarded a boat cruise through Aurlandsfjord and Sognefjord, the world's longest and deepest fjord. It was still raining, [View Full Entry]

Wow. Way to be Zack. Three days in Norway without friends or homework and I blog everyday. Three weeks later with friends and homework and I don't blog at all. Anyways, I think my plan is to try and sum up the last few weeks in a couple of seperate entries. So here goes nothin'! First week of school was a little overwhelming perhaps. I don't really think I realized how much homework was coming nor what its like to sit in 5 hours of classes taught in your second language. Kinda turns your brain to lutefisk. I've been taking a [View Full Entry]
