The Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed in 1815. In 1830 Belgium seceded and formed a separate kingdom. The Netherlands remained neutral in World War I, but suffered invasion and occupation by Germany in World War II. A modern, industrialized nation, the Netherlands is also a large exporter of agricultural products. The country was a founding member of NATO and the EEC (now the EU), and participated in the introduction of the euro in 1999. To be updated

Hey allemaal! Jaja, nog twee weekjes en dan ben ik on my way to Recife.

A warning to the grandparents that may be reading this... there may be things that might shock you. 2nd January - our last day of holidays and back at work in a couple days... Arriving cheerfully early (midday) for Amsterdam we settled in at Bob's Youth Hostel. Pretty well located close to the train station with a 'Grasshopper' bar accross the road and a magical mushroom shop on the corner...selling mushrooms and marijuana and providing advice to those that may need it (i didn't need it.. but i was eavesdropping anyhow! ha!). Now, I had come through Amsterdam on a Contiki [View Full Entry]

I'm so sad. Everyone is leaving. Most people have already left. some are already home. and we leave on wednesday morning. our apartment is pretty much packed up and it looks so bare. But even though i'm going to miss it here, i'm really excited about seeing everyone at home. i'm a little bit worried about how shelle's going to react. i just hope no one gets hurt. So. Last tuesday, keri sarah and i headed out to Fiumicino airport to fly to amsterdam. i hate flying. keri ended up with the worst flight experience though. she didnt get to sit [View Full Entry]

i couldnt move, but atleast i had a window with this gorgeous view
So, we got back from amsterdam on Friday. I had a blast. It is such a cute city. Out of all the cities I've been to, this is the one I could really see myself living in. I feel like I get all the advantages of a city, but you still get a small town feel. The city is like Venice with lots of canals running through it. It was so nice to walk around. The weather wasn't bad either. It was supposed to rain the whole time but we didnt really get any, atleast not while we were out. Oh, [View Full Entry]

Erin again, as usual... No well, look in all honesty I'm actually writing this from Dublin, but couldn't be bothered cramming in the Amsterdam, Paris and Dublin entries all into one. We got to Amsterdam again as it was getting dark, and armed with our trusty directions and enormous backpacks trundled off to our 4 star hotel. On the way we were solicited 3 times for various backpacker hostels and not once for drugs or hookers. On the net the description of the hotel had casually mentioned that it was "a short walk to the red light district". Of course this [View Full Entry]

We had a 5:30 start this morning, but even so, our travellers were all ready to go 15 minutes ahead of schedule. Today we began our 16 day “Best of Europe” Cosmos Tour. We travelled by coach to Dover, where we hopped on the ferry to cross the channel into France. We spent most of the time on deck as we were blessed with another glorious day weather wise. Many were amazed by the ferry which had multiple cafes, shops, lounges and even a pinball parlour. From Calais, we spent some hours on the bus travelling to Amsterdam. There are 31 [View Full Entry]

Verder [View Full Entry]

Amsterdam isn't a destination you immediately think of when considering a Christmas market tour - in fact, I doubt you'd think of it at all. The only reason we included it to our plans was because we came across some bargain Thalys fares, which meant we could travel from Brussels to Amsterdam and back for just £24. Neither Jasmin nor I had ever been to Amsterdam before; we thought this was an opportunity not to be missed. Thalys is a high-speed train run jointly by the Belgian, French, Dutch and German railways. Its network links Brussels with Paris, Amsterdam and Cologne. [View Full Entry]
