The Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed in 1815. In 1830 Belgium seceded and formed a separate kingdom. The Netherlands remained neutral in World War I, but suffered invasion and occupation by Germany in World War II. A modern, industrialized nation, the Netherlands is also a large exporter of agricultural products. The country was a founding member of NATO and the EEC (now the EU), and participated in the introduction of the euro in 1999. To be updated

A castle we cylcled upon and decided to have a picnic
I don't think anyone has travelled or worked in the UK without ever having visited Amsterdam. It's one of those 'must see' places, and with good reason. Apart from the infamous 'activities' you can legally participate in, we discovered the city has a lot more to offer..... Saturday 6th May 2006 As usual we had an early start to make use of our long weekend. We arrived in Amsterdam mid morning and found our way to the Bulldog Backpackers where we had booked our dorm beds. To our surprise the Bulldog was right on the edge of the red light district! Hans and Noel had moved since I's last there in 2000. They have a lovely little apartment which they have done up really nicely. We had a classic Dutch lunch of fresh breads, cheese galore, coffee, coffee, coffee, applestroop, hagel, etc then retired for what was supposed to be a 1 hr nap before going to Frans and Monettes for dinner, but we both hibernated for 4 hours! I've never felt as tired....jet lag at it's best. A shower fixed that and we had a mint evening with Frans, Monette, Fleur, Yos, her boyfriend Oscar and Madalin. Noel had mustered up [View Full Entry]

This whole week the weather has been great. I've been to Scheveningen everyday trying to soak up the sun and quit looking so pasty white. I didn't get a chance to go to Amsterdam Thursday, but I'll do that as soon as I can. Anyway, here's some photos from the past couple of days.... [View Full Entry]

Today Bram and I decided to see more of the Hague since we live here now. We went to a castle that was built in the 1200's called Binnenhof. It was pretty cool, I've got a lot of photos. We went to another castle called Noordeinde (sp?) but it wasn't as interesting because you couldn't really see much of it. We also went to the beach in Scheveningen and had a couple of drinks at a cafe on the beach called Bora Bora. It was a beautiful day so we made the most of it biking all over the city. Zondag 30 april 2006 Naast me ligt mijn grote vriend Alex.

Amsterdam
Amsterdam
The city of Amsterdam.
Katy and I ventured to Amsterdam for the weekend. It was a ton of fun. Amsterdam has more canals than Venice and it was incredibly beautiful. Everywhere you looked it seemed as if boats were parked on grass, but there were canals all over. Everyone seems to have a boat in Amsterdam. It's pretty cool. It was Queen's Day the Saturday we were there, which was tons of fun. There were people in orange everywhere and it was a gigantic party with around 2 million people there for the day. There was also a tulip festival at Kreukenhof, a huge park. [View Full Entry]

We have just come back from Amsterdam which is an amazing city. Surprisingly beautiful, good food and a relaxed attitude to life. And just in case you were wondering - we were on our best behaviour [View Full Entry]

Crazy Piano's
Crazy Piano's
Bram and I at crazy piano's in the patriotic Orange for Queen's Day
So today was Queen's Day. Bram's family came into town and we decided to go to Scheveningen to celebrate the holiday. (That's basically a part of the Hague that's by the sea.) We went to a restaurant called Crazy Piano's and it was really fun. They had a lot of pianists from all over the world who can play pretty much any song you request while you eat, drink or just chill. After that we went to a place called Peukie's for a drink and it was pretty cool too. From what I've been told this wasn't your typical Queen's Day [View Full Entry]
