We have been in Holland for almost a week and have enjoyed just hanging out with the whanau. Roel organised all the cousins our age to get together for a night out and a few beers in celebration of both our birthdays. His being a day before mine on the 7th October. We all met at Tante Hermiens before going down to the local pub for a couple and then headed into Leiden to a few pubs/bars. It not everyday you do a pub crawl on a bike but in Holland aparently it really common. Anyways it was a great night [View Full Entry]

So we arrived in Amsterdam yesterday, Friday morning. By the time that we got through customs and caught the train to the city, it was about 8am. We went to a cafe called the Grasshopper, which was a good time. And by 8:15am, we were having a really good time. So we wandered around for a couple of hours until we found a hostel and got a room for 2 nights. Friday we spent sleeping and walking around. Today, Saturday, we decided to see some sights. We visited the Rijksmuseum. It housed many art works from the Dutch Golden Era, which [View Full Entry]

For day two of our car rental, we (4 polish students and I) decided to squeeze the most out of our Euros and see three cities. We started out in Delft, which sounds about as exciting as it is. It has a nice city hall, and Amsterdam like canals all over the city. That said, it was completely dead. Maybe on a nice sunny day during tourist season the city’s charm comes out. Maybe. We didn’t have time to wait and got back in the car to see what else Holland had to offer. The exact opposite of Delft, The Hague [View Full Entry]

Hi all.. I arrived in Rotterdam last week, in time to be with my Aunt while my Uncle had his one day stay in the Hospital for treatment. Rotterdam is a very new city as so much was bombed in the war, but it sure is a wonderful city, and so many of the buildings are really unique.. Uncle Mike is going amazingly well. We picked him up at the hospital and walked back to the hotel. He has been walking more in Rotterdam than the last 2 months in Vancouver. We took a boat tour of the Harbour, and have [View Full Entry]

Here's a "typical" Amsterdam canal street with boats tied up right in front of the houses and businesses.
(Posted October 20th by Kim) Amsterdam is a very peaceful canal city- surprising with its “bad” reputation. My overall impression is that as long as you avoid the red light districts and coffee shops that it’s a pretty cool place. I found a Christian hostel in one our books that we stayed at to avoid some of the craziness we might have come across at other hostels. We spent the morning taking a canal cruise to get a good feel of the city from the water. The architecture is pretty amazing there, just ask Wilson! I think someone told me that [View Full Entry]

I know that the Europeans have different shoe sizes than we do, but I'm not sure that these are a standard size....
(posted Oct 13) When we lived in Germany, and I was around 4-7 years old or so, I went to Madurodam at least twice. My parents took me once and my grandparents took me once. I can see now why I enjoyed it so much. As a kid this place was awesome, but even now it's very impressive. Madurodam is an outdoor museum that exhibits scale models of many of the most famous/interesting places in the Netherlands. The models are amazing. There are several hundred highly detailed models, including a very impressive model of the airport, some working locks (used to [View Full Entry]

Okay, so it's been forever since we've blogged. There's two REALLY GOOD reasons: 1) We don't have time for you 2) It's taken till Amsterdam to find a cheap internet access point. I'll elaborate on 1).... We've been to Munich, Florence (Italy), Lucca, Cinque Terre, Rome, Venice, Zurich (Switzerland), Interlaken, and are now in Amsterdam (Netherlands).... Expect to get individual blogs on each of these but probably not till we get more time. We've got some AWESOME pictures, including about 70 from the Colliseum alone. Also we've been to La Spezia, Milan, Augsburg, Brienz, Basel, and a few other places.... Headed [View Full Entry]
