OK, that title was horrible, but after some initial stress, I filled my bag (osprey 70) and I can stow all three backpacks I have in one big pack. That should give me some flexibility :) Today, I turned in my lease car (en of lease) applied for the alternative and hope to get some system going when I get back. Flight leaves at 21..and a bit and I'm meeting up with Simon and Mark at the airport. I'm late :x :p I mean: "the hour grows late, when at long last, Roel deems the hour is right to arrive.".. At 18:30 Gonna be fun :D... read more

So much to do! Here's a totally boring list of things I did in preparation. Quick! skip to the next post! :D cached maps recorded working hours for next month got some entertainment to my phone and tablet bought some toiletries, food printed travel itinerary created blog (you're reading it!) got info on sim cards when there (AIS seems like the best carrier. They have good (4G) coverage in the whole country, plus a lot of wifi hotspots. Just not sure which of the many confusing packets would be best for not-think-about-it internet for a month. 10G is probably a lot more than I need) got train ticket got something warm for the way overthere checked on bagage rules decided on using checked-in bagage, despite going for only 10kg max took pictures of important documents, like ... read more

July 9th Uithuizen (Outhousen), NL We have traveled over 360 km since our last blog. The North Sea has been everything we thought it would be. The weather changes quickly here and it can be warm and sunny one day and the next be bitterly cold with howling wind. In Leiden we visited the Pilgrim Museum and met the curator Jeremy Bangs. He had lots of interesting stories and we found it was worth the visit. Our next stop was Driehuis. We had a great lunch along the way at a restaurant called “Sach”. It was decorated kind of old hippie French. Yummy burger and fries. On our way, we had help finding the campground from a man named John. He was so helpful and ended up almost taking us to the campground. Once at the ... read more

Our next destination after leaving Delfzijl was Groningen. There is a province in the Netherlands called Groningen, but it is also the name of the largest city in the north of the Netherlands. As we travel through the canals we pass farm land complete with sheep, cattle and horses. There are many homes and farms with grass roofs and some are decorated with intricate wood cut outs of white swans. It is quite a change from the open ocean, but a very pleasant way to see a country – it reminds us of our early travels down the east coast of the US using the ICW (Inter-coastal Waterway). We had been given some tips from others we had met while on the Baltic Rally of places to see and Groningen was one of them. Our timing ... read more

Sept 4 – Sept 9, 2014 We finally made it to the last country we will be visiting this season before putting the boat on the hard in Lelystad. We had been to the Netherlands twice before, but not in the northern section. The best way to enter when coming from Germany is through the city of Delfzijl. We had a lovely passage here, but were happy to now start our exploration of the northern canals of Holland. We found a very nice marina which was located a short walk from the center of the village. Surprisingly we pulled in right next to another US flagged vessel – this was the first time we have seen one within the canal system. It was nice meeting some fellow Americans who had already been here and were able ... read more
