Background: The Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed in 1815. In 1830 Belgium seceded and formed a separate kingdom. The Netherlands remained neutral in World War I, but suffered invasion and occupation by Germany in World War II. A modern, industrialized nation, the Netherlands is also a large exporter of agricultural products. The country was a founding member of NATO and the EEC (now the EU), and participated in the introduction of the euro in 1999.

We arrived in Amsterdam in the early morning after our long overnight trip on the train. We all had gotten really good, needed sleep on the ride there so we were pretty refreshed and ready to go. However, we did not have a hostel booked (we are starting to slack a little on doing that) so we knew we had quite a search to find somewhere to sleep for the night. We walked around the city to the area where we had booked a hostel for the following 2 nights and asked if they had any availability but they were completely [View Full Entry]

Hey! Well, I'm home! How to sum up the last 2 weeks of my trip... Last post was from Vienna, where it pissed rain all day that we were there (so we did nothing but sit in a cafe, shop, and eat), but cleared up for Harry's birthday party that night. We dressed up as something that begins with the first two letters of our name (i.e. Claire was a clothesline, Gina was gin, Carla was a carrot, Tracy was a tree, etc) and Harry fed us lots of schnapps. Some people found a bicycle, and decided it would be a [View Full Entry]

After the first two days, I had seen almost the whole of Amsterdam from Museums to Volden Park to coffeeshops to red light district. The most striking ofcourse was the red light district. The sheer volume of women at that place was striking. The Amsterdam Red Light District covers a large area of the oldest part of the city. The buildings are tall, thin and crowd together, overlooking the tree lined canals. Its a beautiful area. The Red Light District is located just south (10 minutes walking) of Centraal Station, the main train station. It consists of theaters, shops, museums, restaura [View Full Entry]

Well, we finally made it to France after one very long flight with much to say about the lack of food that we had - one piece of cheese, 2 small Ritz crackers, a rice dish from Presidents Choice for dinner and a muffin for breakfast and Coffee and tea a couple of times. Once arriving at the airport we landed on the tarmac, were bussed to a terminal and herded in like cattle. Apparently this terminal is not used often, the roof collapsed in the other one. Once we got our rental which was a smooth process, off to the [View Full Entry]

Sex Drugs and Democracy - Amsterdam Baby My trip to Amsterdam followed a hectic flight on the Russian airlines - Aeroflot, which gave me a good 8 hours halt at Moscow. I had a little trouble getting out of the airport there, but it all worked out fine in the end. It was the most hectic flight I have ever been on. I finally arrived in Amsterdam at 11:30 PM. I was so excited, I dont even know, if I answered any of the questions the preety lady at the airport was asking me. I am not even sure if [View Full Entry]

Finally. The most highly anticipated weekend of this summer was on the brink of fruition. Amsterdam - that perverse Mecca for virtually all young voyagers throughout Europe titillated by the prospect of legalized marijuana (among many other narcotics), the Red Light district, live sex shows and the birthplace of Heineken and Amstel. My own pilgrimage there would serve two fold; obviously observe (not partake) in the aforementioned activities but also to finally re-unite with some of the Dubai boys - Dar 'Disco Dancer' Homayoun, who has been sent there to take part in a 7 week acting course (of [View Full Entry]

Amsterdam canals

The main commuter route through Amsterdam. Just watch that traffic go!
I don't think that I realised it when we left Copenhagen, but I really didn't want to like Amsterdam. I don't know why, perhaps underneath this liberal exterior I'm a closet conservative, constantly disapproving of the left of centre attitude that undoubtably is asscoicated with this city. Unfortunately, I was to be thouroughly disappointed. Amsterdam is lovely. Even though we failed to partake in the seamier side of the city (honestly!), we really enjoyed ourselves. Before I go any further, I shoud clarify that, yes, Amsterdam does have some seedier parts. And lots of stag and hen par [View Full Entry]

We are talking to you from the flying pig hostel amsterdam. Amsterdam has been a none stop adventure. Today we rented bikes which cause a few problems including nat falling off and analise nearly causing an accident. Celebrated sophie birthday in vondelpark which ended up with suzy's fascination of nature and jasmine nearly weeing herself. Trying to herd 16+ people in one directoin proved to be quite difficult although we did enjoy a lovely group meal. Explored all the coffee shops once again, im sure Travs favourite part of the holiday. The weather has been fantastic and we have even en [View Full Entry]

Still what I consider to be the most amazing city in Europe.. such a vibrant place with hundreds of people mostly tourists wondering around. The most amazing pastry shops, coffee shops (not cafe's) and the red light district.. stunning super models in almost every window.. you have to see it to believe it Didn't really take many pic's her as I already have a bunch from the last time I was here. Greetings from sunny London! It's actually not sunny here, in fact it's pitch black! Granted it is 2am and I have safely arrived at Olivia's friend Cate's house to spend the next two days in her care, showing me around the amazing city of London. Firstly I'll fill you in on my previous stops on the journey: from my afternoon in Berlin I got ready for our 'pub crawl' that evening, which was an absolute blast! The pubs were really cosy and alternative and it was a really awesome way to immerse ourselves in German culture. They certainly love to drink [View Full Entry]
