Been in Holland for the last week. Rick and Marianne picked us up from Amsterdaam central station and took us to Edam. Yes it is a big cheese factory! We've managed to have coffee wherever we go although I have slipped in quite a few Heinikens and Amstels. Had a piss up party on Friday night with more of Leanne's cousins. They are all a lot older and 3 brothers gave us a great night. We've eaten smoked eel which amazingly was pretty good. Weather has been ok but pretty cold. Have been into central Amsterdam where Rick and I were allowed to go shopping in the red light area. (NOT!) Stayed with Angelique another cousin and yesterday had dinner at Loeks. Bastard hasn't changed, no grey hair and he will turn 50 next February. He ... read more

After Texel, I decided to show a “traditional” Dutch town to Diana and Francis. We decided to go check out Edam and Marken. Edam is most well known for its cheese market that happens on Fridays. Although we were not here on a Friday we got to sample some of the delicious cheeses. I really love Dutch cheese. I never got into cheeses when I was living in Australia, but the Dutch cheese… mmm lekker (tasty). We had a walk around the small town then settled to some cheese and baguette for lunch. Followed by some tasty scrolls and cakes from the bakery. Following Edam, we decided to catch the bus to Volendam. I had visited Volendam previously with Nadia and I thought it would be nice to take Diana and Francis there. We had a ... read more

Bikes, cheese, and clogs...oh my! I started my day just like everybody else...hungover and tired. We jumped in the coach for a short drive to Edam, a little town just outside of Amsterdam, for a bike ride. In Amsterdam, and I guess Holland in general, everyone rides bikes all over the place. You should see the bike parking garage in the city. It literally was stories high and packed with thousands of bikes. Cars and pedestrians have to yield to the bikes! In Edam we clambered on our "granny bikes" which were just like beach cruisers. Our bike guide lady talked to us for a little bit about where we were going and to be careful about parking our bikes since they often times fell over since people didn't put the kick stands down correctly. Well, ... read more

Today was the windiest day so far since I've been here. I'm not talking about the short Seattle gusts of wind that just whip you a bit in the face. This was like sticking your head out of the window of a moving car - kind of wind. I didn't think it was so bad until I almost got blown off my bike as I rode to school - I'm not kidding! The wind was blowing at my side so the whole way to school I had to lean quite a bit on my bike to avoid getting blown down. I felt like Piglet on the Blustery Day when the only thing that saved him from blowing away was a big fat scarf around his neck that Pooh bear held on to. I had a meeting ... read more

Hans and Noel had moved since I's last there in 2000. They have a lovely little apartment which they have done up really nicely. We had a classic Dutch lunch of fresh breads, cheese galore, coffee, coffee, coffee, applestroop, hagel, etc then retired for what was supposed to be a 1 hr nap before going to Frans and Monettes for dinner, but we both hibernated for 4 hours! I've never felt as tired....jet lag at it's best. A shower fixed that and we had a mint evening with Frans, Monette, Fleur, Yos, her boyfriend Oscar and Madalin. Noel had mustered up an itinery for the next 10 days that meant we'd see all my aunties, uncles and cousins. Day 2 Joep and Joyce picked us up for a trip to Roesmond for a Liberation Day concert. ... read more

Edam is a small village in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. The town of 7,000 inhabitants is mostly a bedroom community for Amsterdam, but was once a thriving seaport. Now known for its cheese. After spending a few hours in Edam, it was back to Amsterdam for the afternoon and The National Rememberance Ceremony. The National Rememberance Ceremony took place at the National Monument on Dam Square at 8p.m. The square was closed for daily traffic from 4p.m. on. A few minutes before 8p.m., HM Queen Beatrix laid a wreath at the foot of the National Monument. At 8p.m. sharp, two minutes of silence were observed by more than 20,000 people who had gathered on Dam Square, a very impressive moment. The two minutes of silence were observed throughout the Netherlands.... read more
