Hi Everyone!
I have stayed in Amsterdam for a few days and enjoyed the great weather and friendly people here very much. In addition to visiting the must-see attractions including Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, and the Red Light District, I also encourage everyone to try some local specialties. The Spui Square in City Centre has a couple of nice restaurants and bars. When I stopped by Cafe Hoppe at Spui Square before dinner time, many people who just got off work gathered in the outdoor seating area to chat and enjoy some drinks and light snacks before dinner.
Here are a few specialties I would like to recommend:
Bitterballen (Dutch specialty meatballs), Gouda (cheese: either young or old), Jenever (Dutch Gin), and local beer (such as Amstel and Palm). Personally, I think bitterballen are very tasty with crunchy crusts and soft fillings. Gouda was served with mustard and I saw some people eating Gouda with mustard and pickles altogether, which, when I tried them myself, I found it quite an interesting combination of flavor.
Moreover, local fries are typically served with mayo on paper tray or cone.
Manneken pis has really amazing fries and mayo. They have three sizes that range from 2.50 to 3.50 Euros with up to 15 varieties of sauce you can choose from (e.g., mayo, ketchup, curry, bbq sauce, tartar sauce, etc.). There's one right on the main street if you head directly away from Central Station. Try them out and you'd be surprised!
I look forward to seeing everyone in Amsterdam!
Ann
