In the afternoon, we left for the airport of Bali, Denspasar. This two flights went everything than comfortable. The first flight was fine, but then slowly the problems started. Yesterday evening, I had a chat with an Australian backpacker. He was already in Ubud and wanted to go with a friend to Kuta. His friend, should come out of Australia, but all flights to Bali from Australia and returns were cancelled. This was due the activity of a Volcano at Bali. The Volcano released Volcanic smoke which is dangerous during the air flights. Therefore, all flights were cancelled to and from Australia. When the wind changes and the smoke will to the direction of North Asia and Europe, it means that our flight would be cancelled as well. Which means that we could not leave Bali. ... read more

Monday 15 June: A rather early start this morning as Zachary woke up just after 5:30 and wasn’t getting back to sleep. We managed to pass the time until 7:45 at which time we headed out for McD’s to get breakfast, only to discover they didn’t open until 8. This is a rather strange Europe-wide quirk we’re still not used to – what’s the point of opening for breakfast at 8? Anyway we didn’t find anything better so we hung out for a while and went in. It was rather chilly this morning with a cold wind – a bit of a change from yesterday so we were all keen to get inside. After breakfast Heather finished the packing and we stored our stuff in the lobby area so we could go shopping. We had spotted ... read more

It was a short walk to the Begijnhof, that served as a home or shelter for women starting in 1535, with habitation going back about another 300 years. The Begijnhof is a walled complex set in two connected courtyard squares with gardens, small museums, and a nice central church built in the 1800s. The nice church built in the 1800s really stood out in the in the back of the courtyard. It was another short walk to Valkenburg Park. The park has some very nice trees and flowers, and a nice canal with a nifty red foot bridge. From one side of this City Park is a view of a Large Red Building, that I could not find any information about. This park is a good (free) place to hang out. It was not far outside ... read more

Baarle-Nassau and Baarle-Hertog - the conjoined twins of geography In Netherlands there is a town with the name Baarle-Nassau. In Belgium there is a town with the name Baarle-Hertog. These two towns may be lying in different countries but are in fact one town. The reason it has two names is that through the town there are several borders between Belgium and Netherlands which divides the town in two. So parts of the town is in Netherlands (Baarle-Nassau) and parts of the town is in Belgium (Baarle-Hertog). A town with a country border going through it is a bit odd, but not completely unique. There are other towns and cities in the world that are divided. What makes Baarle-Hertog/Baarle-Nas... read more

Arrived after the Johannesburg tour, with the memories still fresh in our mind, I had to prepare for my fight. I took a fast shower, my backpack was mostly been packed. Our flight would leave around 23.55, and Bheki would like to leave around 19:00. It was a drive of 45 minutes. However, the two girls of the Soweto cycling tour were not back at 19:00. They came in a hurry at 19:15. They took a fast shower, pack their bags and they were finished at 19:30. It was time to go, to leave South-Africa and to go back to home. In 45 minutes we were standing at the airport of Johannesburg. And it was time to say farewell to Manda and Bheki. I found this quite hard. They took a very good care for us ... read more

We returned home to Drimmelen in glorious sunshine and were met again by our favourite harbour master...Marie Louise. We had a lovely passage back in the sunshine, lunch for a final time in the Biesbosch where we used the box moorings in a more convenient than the accepted Dutch way and then mooring up in OUR spot in Drimmelen with the power station as our view from the deck – sounds awful but we have grown quite fond of it!! We had 36 hours to do everything necessary to leave Isabela in her winter home for the next 6 months. So in true Schroeder fashion we did a list of jobs that this entailed...the rather fluid total came to 40. We also have a list of what we are leaving on Isabela, what we have to ... read more

The weather has continued hot and fine and wonderful, and at times, very unlike Holland, with little wind. On the Sunday Paul’s brother and sister in law arrived – at 0900!!! Having had a good over-night crossing. The task was then to move cars such that they would have a car at the end of our next 3 days journey and so we didn’t have to do another circular trip. This meant – and here you will have to be patient – a trip in their car to Sneek, a return journey to Naarden for lunch in 2 cars and then 2 cars to Drimmelen followed by our car back to Naarden. Heather pleaded a problem with her head so stayed behind- a cynical person may have thought it showed a lack of problem with her ... read more

From Piesport at the Mosel we had an 80 Kilometres trip to Saarland to visit Liz Family. Some of we had not seen for 24 years. We chose to drive the small roads so we would not arrive to early. It took us through a beautiful area, but again the weather was not so friendly so you could not do much video or photography. On arrival we were warmly greeted and of course the German way with coffee and cake. Later in the day the working part of the family also arrived. It was arranged that we had a barbeque., or what they call a grill night. Sonja & Joerg were just the proud owners of an Australian barbeque and of course wanted to show how good they were. There was German brattwurst and Leoner, two ... read more

Bijna vertrekken we! Jasper & Manon... read more

Arriving into Amsterdam compared to China was a complete breeze; so breezy that the lackadaisical stature of the immigration officer was a tad unnerving. He only asked me two questions, "What is your purpose?" and "How long will you be staying?". That was it. No, "Where are you staying?" or Who is your contact?". After my easy peasy immigration experience, I caught a train to Eindhoven for 20€ (one way...) and enjoyed a 70 minute train ride to Holland's southern province, Noord Brabant, home to many farms and some industry (i.e. ASML). Evan picked me up at the train station where we proceeded to act like we hadn't seen each other in a year.... I'm sure we've already offended the Dutch! ? Evan and I made our way back to the apartment (we only got lost ... read more
