A 6 hour train trip took me from Germany to Holland where i have 44 cousins scattered over this tiny country. Stayed with the eldest one in Borne for a night and the next morning we did a little bike ride around the place to see some of the sites. Bike riding and The Dutch is like bread and cheese. They just go together and belong. All day long on paths and roads and through forests and along the laneways, there is a procession of bikes and riders. Old couples out for a picnic, young Mums with a kid in front and one behind out shopping, whole teams on racing bikes, kids out and about, massive amounts of parked bikes at train stations, biking is like breathing, part of everyday life. Yesterday i travelled to another ... read more

WOW! So we had a lovely long flight of 7 and a half hours or so, were served supper and breakfast, and saw the sun set and rise within three hours. The sky never got all that dark. We had MALE flight attendants, which I thought was weird, but the rest of the family thought it was perfectly normal. Ah, yes, and we're in Europe now. My dad's cousins Nel and Wilma picked us up from the airport and drove us to their brother's house in a wee town named Barneveld. We got here at around 9:30 in the morning here, though our systems were thinking 3 am. I slept for a good 5 hours and recently awoke. today we will be trying to adjust ourselves for the most part, and tomorrow we go to Germany ... read more

Day 18: Kellenburg to Netherlands
Published: March 23rd 2011Europe » Netherlands » Gelderland » ApeldoornDeparting Kellenburg we decided to head straight for a larger town for an internet connection as Pam had to work so we decided on Enshede on the German Holland border. I have to say now after a couple of days the Autobahns are not so intimidating as earlier, I figured when in Germany do as the Germans do so I just put the foot down and drove like a crazy German driver. It was kind of cool making our first border crossing but all you see now is a small sign that you are now in the Netherlands, why they call it this instead of Holland I don’t know. What a drama it seems that much of Holland is closed for motor homes until the end of April and after visiting 2 camp grounds that were ... read more
What a boring title you might ask yourself if you have never seen my blogs before. Is he lazy? Perhaps, a little, but the real reason has to do with the theme and nature of my trip. You see all my blogs here on travelblog have been part of one long trip which I started nearly five years ago. It was never my intention that the trip would last this long. So what went wrong? On a spring day five years ago I decided to start on an overland journey from Europe to Australia, a trip I reckoned that would take me about a year. That isn't an unreasonable estimate in fairness; in fact I think it takes most people a year to complete such a trip. But I found out that I wasn't one of ... read more
Just wanted to start off by saying Thanks! to all of you who have sent comments and messages along to us! It is always nice to hear from our friends and family and we are glad you are enjoying the blog! Today we went to the Open Air Museum which was close by in Arnhem. This was a little like the Dutch version of Pioneer village but way cooler. There were homes and farms and mills and churches and a working cheese factory all around the huge property. You could walk and/or get around on these street trams, some of which dated back to early 1900s and still work. You could hop on the tram at any of the 6 stations and hop off where you wanted. We also stopped at the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek ... read more
I woke up, stayed in bed, fell asleep again and woke up again. Then I got up and lounged around in the living room for a while until everyone else woke up. Once they had, we had breakfast together, me having two large bowls of cereal. There was several other items of food, but I didn't eat any. We packed up our things for the day and went and got in the car with Aunty Betsy. Aunty Betsy drove us to a nearby town of Staphorst. There were several farms on the way, with different types of crop, but when we did get to Staphorst, we noted the unusual layout of the town. Instead of rows and rows of streets like a normal town, it has one road, then a house with 2 or 3 houses ... read more
The day started very similarly to the previous day; lying in on my air materess and only getting up when Dad comes in and says that we are going on a bike ride. I got dressed and made my way downstairs, and had breakfast, once again, museli. Then, Nana came in with Leidy and they had a map which they gave to us. It showed Huizen and Naarden so we wouldn't get lost. We took the same bikes, putting the hipbag into the bag on the side of Leidy's bike. We rode out of the town on the streets we knew to the harbour. From there, our map showed a bike track, so we worked our way around the coast before we found it, passing a firefighting excersise which Dad rather liked. The track we were ... read more
