Couldn't get up to say goodbye to Carol! ahhhhhh....but called her... well, will see her during Chinese New Years so it wont be too long...heeee Chi was so nice to drive me to the train station! So I hopped on the train and went to Arnhem, a city near the border of Germany. The city is really....boring? I went to the tourist info and besides museums and one church, they can't recommend anything else to me!...Oh well, my original plan was to go to the National Park anyways..haaa! The closest one is really close! 15 mins bus ride! Nationaal Park De Hoge Veluwe, with 5000Hectares of land..... There is this museum up north of the park, which is like 10km away from the entrance. Good that they have free bikes to ride! so I did a ... read more

Goodbye Nijmegen + Jaap, Els, Gerard, Marya, and Esther
Published: June 18th 2007Europe » Netherlands » Gelderland » NijmegenAfter another great sleep, I spent much of my last day in Nijmegen walking around the city centre. It was a big market day again. Lots of locals were out shopping and sampling the in-season herring. I tried herring once the other day...once was enough! I videoed a lot of the city for my opa to see if he remembers any of it from his days here when I get back. In the evening, Gerard and Marya invited me over with Jaap and Els for dinner. Marya had cooked up another delicious feast. My last home-cooked dinner for a long while I'm sure! After dinner, Gerard brought out some photos he'd found of me and my family from last time we were here (exactly 20 years ago - 'Juni 87' was written on the back ... read more
After the best sleep I've had since leaving home in a nice big double bed, Jaap and Els took me to visit a nearby WWII Museum. I don't know much about war history, but more and more on this trip I'm enjoying learning about the history of places I'm visiting. To start out I joined a guide. He was giving the tour in Dutch so that idea didn't last too long! I ended up making my own way round the museum. Luckily all the display information was in English too. I didn't even consider it might only be in Dutch, since everyone in Amsterdam spoke English. It was really interesting reading the war history of Nimegen especially. It gave me an idea of what my grandparents lived through back in the 1940's. ... read more
I caught the train down to Nijmegen today. It's about an hour and a half train ride from Amsterdam. This is The Netherland's oldest city and is where my mum's parents (my oma and opa), and my mum were all born. A lot of my relatives have passed away here, but Els and Gerard, 2 of my opa's brother's children still live here and I met them last time I was here, 20 years ago. Obviously I don't remember too much, including what people look like, so waiting to meet Els at the train station had a bit of a blind date type feel to it. This quickly vanished when I saw Els. She had one of the biggest and happiest smiles I've ever seen, and almost instantly she and Jaap, made me feel right ... read more

we are in arnhem, home of classic bills championship manager dutch team, vitesse arnhem! its absolutely freaking scorching! i quite like arnhem, its small but still kinda bustling. had a hilarious moment in a bar restaurant just now. we'd been walking for ages trying to find somewhere to have a drink, and we finally decided on a place by the river. we go in. the barmaid, as seems to be the way, is very attractive. gaz gets served, and then the barmaid proceeds to ignore me, minor and dizzee smizzle entirely. like, she just stands behind the bar looking at us for a bit, walks around the restaurant and comes back, cleans glasses and just basically wastes time. weird! minor eventually got served, i got engrossed in reading about the weather, and everyone was happy. weird ... read more
Family reunion in the Netherlands
Published: August 7th 2007Europe » Netherlands » Gelderland » GendringenFinally the weekend had arrived where my family had travelled to Europe for a holiday and I had the privlidge of buying myself a ticket to Rotterdam to meet them so we could visit some of our distant dutch relatives. It was quite strange after travelling alone for so long to be met at an airport, and even stranger to be met by my family! Was great to see them all again, and for my first night we stayed with Arthur and Karline. The next morning we were up for the Rotterdam International Discgolf Tournament. Despite a small turnout of only 3 players we had perfect weather and a tough tight course that proved challanging, especially for a bunch of guys that were more than a little rusty. There were still a few awesome shots all ... read more
Ireland to Prague to Italy- Where Am I?
Published: April 9th 2007Europe » Netherlands » Gelderland » WellWhat a long, strange trip its been. For the past three weeks I've basically been travelling non-stop. It all started with my trip to Ireland. We came back for a day and a half only to leave for Haarlem (NL) on Wednesday night. From Haarlem we drove to Amsterdam and then flew to Prague. From Prague I took an overnight train to Italy where I spent two days in Venice, then Florence, and finally Easter in Rome. And I just got back at 12:30 today. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I should probably talk about everything thats happened between my trip to London and Paris and now. There's so much. (London and Paris will have their very own entry which will be up soon.) The weekend after we got back from our first excursion/independent travel break I went with Meaghan ... read more
Untitled Ian Mills My school is a European School with links with schools in Hungary, Italy and Holland...every year they have an exchange programme with one of the schools in these countries - this year it is with Holland and as there are so few male teachers at my school I was asked to travel to Holland and supervise the exchange. We travelled by train from Grossenhain to the school in Holland in a small town called Stevensbeek. I met the teacher that I would be staying with - Steef Arts - and we drove to his House in Nijmegen where after a bit of dinner we went out to his "Student Club". It was an action packed week with something going on everyday including visits to a War Museum on Overloon, a day at ... read more
