Background: The Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed in 1815. In 1830 Belgium seceded and formed a separate kingdom. The Netherlands remained neutral in World War I, but suffered invasion and occupation by Germany in World War II. A modern, industrialized nation, the Netherlands is also a large exporter of agricultural products. The country was a founding member of NATO and the EEC (now the EU), and participated in the introduction of the euro in 1999.

On October 15th, I went with the International Student Organization ('Wings') to Camp Westerbork, a Nazi camp in the northern Netherlands. It was a day trip by tour bus that was actually only 5 hours total, but it was really interesting, and I'm glad I went. There is actually basically nothing left from the camp at the location; in the 1970s, the Dutch government asked the jewish community what they wanted done with the site, and the jewish people didn't want to be reminded of what had happened, so they requested it be demolished.
