Founded in 963, Luxembourg became a grand duchy in 1815 and an independent state under the Netherlands. It lost more than half of its territory to Belgium in 1839, but gained a larger measure of autonomy. Full independence was attained in 1867. Overrun by Germany in both World Wars, it ended its neutrality in 1948 when it entered into the Benelux Customs Union and when it joined NATO the following year. In 1957, Luxembourg became one of the six founding countries of the European Economic Community (later the European Union), and in 1999 it joined the euro currency area. To be updated

I just got done exploring my sixth European country--Luxembourg! What a blessing this day trip has been. Last night I was feeling worn out and wasn't sure about making the long journey. When I woke up this morning early to the sound of my neighbor's loud music and checked my watch, it was just a few minutes after eight. For some reason I was renewed about the idea of the trip, jumped out of bed, packed quickly for the day and was off on my journey on the 9:09 am train. Jesus blessed me with a renewed strength and perspective on [View Full Entry]

We only had one night to spare for Luxembourg so it’s pretty lucky that it’s another of the ridiculously tiny countries of Europe. It’s about 2500 km2 stuck in the middle of France, Belgium and Germany that’s been fought over for centuries but is now the only independent Grand Duchy in the world. We caught the train from Brussels and arrived in a mysterious fog that made the capital seem like a fairytale kingdom which in some ways it is. Luxembourg City is perched on top of a hill with stone fortresses surrounding it and beautiful turreted buildings that look like [View Full Entry]

As part of my rail pass I bought, I had the option to go to Luxembourg, and on my way from Belgium to Germany, I had a free day, so I thought, why not check out this little country called Luxembourg? I didn't know much about it other than they have a very active royal family and are known for their fairy tales. After arriving, I walked around the main square, and couldn't help but notice all the rich designer shops and jewelry stores. It seemed like most of the people around me where couples, perhaps on a honeymoon or holiday, [View Full Entry]

So I finally got around to finding this site where I guess I can put pictures and write a little bit about what is going on over here... infinitely easier than trying to email everyone! Here is a little re-cap for anyone that my mother has not contacted (probably multiple times- love you mom!): The flights here went well even though we were delayed 2 hours in Newark and I couldn't really sleep much. Oh well, we landed safely and I had both my bags so life was good. I somehow made it through the whole day and crashed at about [View Full Entry]

The Atom
The Atom
An iron atom magnified 165 BILLION times
Two hours regular ('regular' = 120 km/h) driving in a southerly direction moved us from Amsterdam, cross an invisible border and into Belgium. We were on a three-day road trip with Mama Marcia and Ton and Brussels was within our sights. But Ton insisted that Arthur, an old friend, was the ideal person to demo the city to us. Arthur was easy to like. He was a smart older man with an awefully funny dry sense of humor. His sharp, inquisitive eyes surveyed us thru big spectacles. Arthur was driving now and he pulled up in front of 'The Atom' - [View Full Entry]

Gudde Moien! As you probably realized from the greeting, I have left Germany. I'm now in Luxembourg (the world's last sovereign Grand Duchy) where Luxembourgish is the most commonly spoken language of the official three - French and German being the other two. Luxembourg is an amazing little country of less than half a million people. Despite its small size, there is nothing simple or even ‘quaint’ about Luxembourg. The architecture is massive and ancient, the city is well laid out, and the streets are filled with incredibly nice cars. (Not surprisingly, Luxembourg does ha [View Full Entry]
