Founded in 963, Luxembourg became a grand duchy in 1815 and an independent state under the Netherlands. It lost more than half of its territory to Belgium in 1839, but gained a larger measure of autonomy. Full independence was attained in 1867. Overrun by Germany in both World Wars, it ended its neutrality in 1948 when it entered into the Benelux Customs Union and when it joined NATO the following year. In 1957, Luxembourg became one of the six founding countries of the European Economic Community (later the European Union), and in 1999 it joined the euro currency area. To be updated

Luxembourg ….And the 4 hour train ride! Well…we all had separate cars on the train to Luxembourg. Jeff, Chuck, MB, Willis and I all shared a car. The boys watched a movie while MB and I both listened to music and enjoyed the scenery. After the movie was done Willis was getting a bit antsy, so I gave him Jeff’s camera and told him to have fun! He got some incredible pictures of the others sleeping, etc. Then, he decided to play a few practical jokes on Jeroen. He managed to find an empty Gin bottle and fill it with water [View Full Entry]

After 2 hours of me driving, we finally entered the city of Luxembourg. It was raining and grey and of course I was the only one with an umbrella or a jacket, but since it didn't rain too hard it didn't put our jouney in danger. In the city, I intended to park in a yellow or violet zone, because I read on the internet that it's cheapest. Other parking spaces are 1,50Euro+. Good idea but hard to realize..The city doesn't have many traffic lights, and the only thing that saved me from completely getting lost is that the other drivers [View Full Entry]

So today I took the bus to Echternach and then Beaufort, where the family of Jamie Vosacek (winner of my Crazy Shirts/Pants party, for those of you that were there) live. Actually they have a dairy farm in Beaufort, and last name is Lux which says to me that they are a Luxembourg ESTABLISHMENT of sorts! The Luxs even own the sheep that graze on the grounds of the state-owned ancient castle nearby, so there you go. I had lunch with Jamie's grandma (Bomi in Lux'ish), aunt and uncle, then toured the farm stables complete with adult and baby cows--plus the [View Full Entry]

Luxembourg was not a part of my original itinerary but is so worth it! The capital city is called Luxembourg in the country of Luxembourg (go figure); it is a city built layer upon layer with steep climbs from the "valley floor" to the main bustle of town center, which affords nice viewpoints of the below rooftops and church steeples. The roofs are all heavily slanted to allow for the weather (I assume), and all bear a consistent black tiling to make for very pretty pictures. Also, the Luxembourg skies are very clean and apparently characterized by huge puffy white clouds [View Full Entry]

Have you ever stopped and thought about how terrible Guns and Roses lyrics are? Neil and I did, and it entertained us for days. "You know where you are baby? You're in the jungle. You're gonna die!" Terrible. Amsterdam is too far away from Gimmelwald to get there in a day so we had to break up our journey. Well, actually, it's more the lack of high speed rail running between the two places. So we decided to add another country to the list: Luxembourg. A small country, and from what we've learned on this trip, smaller seems to be better. [View Full Entry]

So clearly I've been here quite a few weeks already, but I wanted to do this awhile ago and I'm finally getting around to it. I got to Lux on May 15th and we had an orientation weekend where we went around Differdange (the city in Luxembourg where I'm staying) and Luxembourg city. That weekend we went and saw the American and German burial sights of the Battle of the Bulge. We also went on a walking tour around Luxembourg city so we could start to orient ourselves if we ever make it around that area (about a 45 minute train [View Full Entry]

Well, that was the last day in Europe. Yesterday, extensive partying with good ol' friends, today extreme luggage-problem (well, there were 10kg that were not really planned...!!!), then Granny's favouritz concert and finally good ol' barbecue. After all, there will be not so much meat this summer, so I have to be prepared, don't you think? ;o) Tomtom just told me to get up at 6 o'clock tomorrow, seems to become a long, long day. Hope that Iberia will be kind and fly in scheme. Next message will be written in Senegal then, I guess! [View Full Entry]
