(Day 12 on the road) From Berlin I took the train up to the island of Ruegen in the north of Germany, and from there I caught a ferry to Klaipeda in Lithuania. The ferry ride was smooth. The only time a bit of action arose when I decided to burn a piece of paper in my cabin. The crew of the vessel were not amused at all about this, as I soon found out when about seven crew-members appeared outside my door :-) After mediterranean Antalya and hip Berlin, Klaipeda was somewhat of an anticlimax. The guidebook I was reading called it a "grim" city, and this fits it very well. Apart from the small yet pretty old city center, there was nothing really that caught my eye. So after a visit to the rather ... read more

At half past eight we left our backpacks in the cell and went for a quick look at Karosta naval port. We couldn't find anything of interest and there wasn't much of anything else. Karosta was still a pretty eerie place even in daylight. People just stood on their balconies and stared at us. Almost like a horror movie. Back in Liepaja we caught a bus to Klaipeda which took around two hours. Funnily there were about eight of us who got off our bus and walked over the car park to the hostel. Luckily we'd booked earlier in the morning and had got the last two beds. The hostel is tiny and they make you leave between 12 and 3. We went into Klaipeda centre and had a walk around. There isn't much there, but ... read more

Here are some pictures of Klaipeda, Juodkrante, and Nida. A really beautiful place; I was surprised by how few people there were on the beaches, in the towns and villages, etc., but I guess the tourist season was coming to a close. I had written a longer more descriptive entry about these two places, but it somehow got erased. ... read more

9/21/06 So I have been meaning to write for a while and finally the time has come. And though I have a million things that I was going to write about, the following was not one of them Today I was reading Margot Schaal’s blog; for those of you who don’t know who this is, she is the mother of my friend Kaneza from Wesleyan, and she is right now living in Rwanda. Among other things, she is teaching yoga/feldenkreis classes for a UN group there (I think that is right). But in her short email to a group of friends she mentions very briefly a developing friendship between her and a guardian of a house near where she lives. The relationship began one day when the man offered Margot some food, knowing that she had ... read more

So far we have had two concerts in Lithuania. They were both sponsored by the same church. One was in thier city and the other was at a school in a neighboring town. At the first concert one of the dancers hurt her foot right before the concert. We all prayed for her and she was able to dance for half of the concert but the next day found out she tore a tendon in her foot and can't dance for 3 weeks. So be praying for her. There were also even more obnoxious mockers but that is just a sign to us that there are definately unbelievers in the audience which is what we have been praying for. And God is so good because 80 people sought salvation. Then the next day at the school ... read more
