This tiny principality is located in central Europe, between Austria and Switzerland. Vaduz is the capital of this Alpine "dwarf". The population is only some 35,000, but the quality of life is one of the highest in the world. It is the smallest German-speaking country in the world. It is also one of only two countries in the world that are doubly landlocked, meaning that all surrounding countries are also landlocked (the other country is Uzbekistan).
Liechtenstein is a tourist (mostly winter sports) and banking center. Some of its revenue also comes from manufacturing that includes pharmaceuticals, optical lenses, electronics, metalworking, and food processing.
It is a constitutional monarchy with one legislative house. The chief of state is Prince Hans-Adam II, and the head of government is the prime minister. The Prince is the world's sixth wealthiest leader with an estimated wealth of USD $5 billion.
Liechtenstein has no airport; the closest airport is Zürich. The easiest way to reach this country is by train. The only train stations are in Sargans, Buchs (SG), and Feldkirch, Buchs being the closest one to Vaduz. From there, simply hop on a bus to Liechtenstein.
Make sure to get a
souvenir passport stamp when in Vaduz (vailable at all tourist offices in Liechtenstein for only EUR 2).
