Latvia, our last European country before we head to Russia. We have had a fantastic time exploring Europe, and although there is a lot more to see on our travelling, it is sad that this part of our trip is coming to an end. Rain hung over the streets of Riga, but still the city showed its beauty, fantastic and interesting buildings were everywhere, all with lovely detailing and facades. We made a quick stop to the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia, which gave us a good breakdown of the Russian and German occupations of the Baltic states. It is nice to see that finally these states have their independence, and can flourish without the shadow of their larger neighbours. The rest of our time in Riga was taken up with wandering the streets ... read more

Hello my dears Here i am in front of the PC after 1 month of NOT writing... Here is what happened during this time, first of all i went to Riga for MC to MC to MC meeting with Latvia and Estonia, great trip, great people and great places, you will find some pictures from the meeting at the end of this post. One week later i went with the Lithuanian MC camping, 50 KM away from Vilnius, it was not the usual camping that we have in Romania because Lithuania does not have mountains, so we went to a lake :D. Cool and nice, it rained for 3 days and we were all wet all the way but we really enjoyed the trip, the beers and the fact that we were together there, we went ... read more

Hello bloggers... well we are now in Cesis (pronounced Cheses) - a small medieval town (what else?) in the country side about 1.5 hours from Riga, the capital of Latvia. Since our last update we had a couple of days in the university town of Tartu in Estonia - just what hte guidbook said .. a leafy treelined town with history although we didn't really get the mystical ambiance they talked about... From there we hit Riga and were rather dissapointed. The UNESCO preserved town square appears to apply to only one building - the rest were either ugly Soviet monstrosities or modelrn glass towers.... most of the old town had newer buildings spread in amongst the old ones (not like Tallin whch was really special and old worldy). So we didn't stay long (apart ... read more

Good day, Forgive me father for I have sinned... its been over a week since my last blog.. I thought we might see something before we report back to you, the trouble is now is that we have been so busy sprinting around europe that I might have forgotten what I was going to say...let me try to recall... or just check Heathers daily journal.... We made our way to Tallinn Estonia via hovercraft from Helsinki. short journey about a hour and a half and the fastest option they were a few... we quickly made our way (walking to the main square) no bother.... the old town is small and quite navigable in a day or so... well that what we had... Prices were much cheaper than Scandinavia. We decided to take a small walking tour ... read more

So far our European "Summer" has been less than impressive: instead of sun we've been caught in torrential downpours and forced to wade through mud, where has the sun gone? It seems strange that we were having warmer weather in Siberia (not normally a place you associate with sunshine!). Unfortunately our time in Latvia was marked with lots and lots of rain ... First stop was Riga where we stayed with the very hospitable Jolanta and took refuge in her apartment from the uncooperative weather. Riga's old town centre was pretty small to explore so we were able to cover most of it in between bouts of rain, walking through the pretty gardens along the canal. The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia was a really interestiing account of both Soviet and Nazi occupations of Latvia, ... read more

After 20 mins. the sun was out and the tep. back up.Tomorrow I'm off to my next stop just north of Venice , a place arranged for me by Ivano& Catherine Segato ( a relative run Argri Tourism). The other day Lelde and I took a bus to the coast to go for a walk along the beach. This is when we saw a beaver cleaning himself by the sea. This brings the thought that Latvia's ecology is stil well intact, with a system that supports many large mammals, including wolves and the odd bear! Yesterday I experienced something new. Lelde and I were waiting at a bus, stop to go home, when an old coach pulled up, opening it 's doors. We got on and Lelde informed me that this is a form of ''unofficial'' public transport, something that used to happen alot more often in Riga. Surely enough, the coach quietly made it's way along the normal bus routes, pulling in at the stops- very enterprising(read- illegal). The idiosyncrasies of life in ... read more

We started the day picking up supplies from a local supermarket in Sigulda, and buying breakfast from the bakery attached to our hotel. This turned out to be a game of chance, with many sweet-looking baked goods containing meat, savoury-looking ones containing fruit and some apparently containing both... Our first stop was the medieval town of Cesis. First up, we visited a castle where we were given hard hats and candle lanterns and pointed in the right direction to explore dungeons and towers. In one room we found a archeologist in a smithy using authentic methods to recreate ancient metalwork found on the site and from the surrounding regions. In the grounds, they also had the town's statue of Lenin, lying on it's side as a poignant reminder of soviet occupation. Afterwards, we sat in a ... read more
