October 22 I headed from Estonia back to Latvia and one more couchsurfing adventure. It was only about a three hour trip to Riga, a big city, where I was to meet Ligita at her office that was right downtown. For a change of pace I arrived on time and even found a place to park for a few minutes, which was very difficult there. Once again I had that now familiar combination of excitement and nervousness that goes with meeting new people and finding myself in another unfamiliar situation. Ligita is a beauty consultant or something like that and I think she is quite well known in Riga. Meeting her for the first time was a bit overwhelming. Ligita is probably about six feet tall, she had purple highlights in her hair, fishnet stockings and ... read more

Autum has arrived here in Latvia now and the change of secnery is fantastic exp in the town of Sigulda where it is the 'extreme sports' capital of Latvia. First though I arrived in Riga from Estonia and meet up with my host in the city and back to her place to have a quick chat, then out for a massive meal then heading out. She was working at a club in the city so that was perfect for me knowing someone behind the bar always helps. Also I got to meet up with a friend from Ireland that I had meet 18 months ago and it is always fantastic to catch up with people that you have meet on your travels again. Next night in Riga just happened to be my hosts birthday party at ... read more

well, this mornings was a pretty big waste of an entry, so i shall make up for that with this beast. and beast is most definitely the word to describe the majesty that is about to unravel on this here piece of networky canvas. i suppose i will start off by saying what i know, what everyone knows, and what is generally becoming more and more hard fact as time goes on. i love being here. it's not as if this is the most thrilling place on the planet, far from it. but it's just nice, and i'm a fan of nice. after another boring flight that wasnt even saved by the view (it was a cloudy morning), i arrived at riga airport and was just generally excited. ok, there are other reasons for that, but ... read more

We always heard about students backpacking around Europe in very low budget (below 10 Euros a day). Even thou we heard all this stories we could never understand how they did it, since Europe has the most expensive costs for transport and accommodation we have seen. So what is the enigma? Only after 90000Km traveled in 3 years on the road we finally found out! We left Tallinn early in the morning, took a local bus to the "hitch hike hotspot" and within a few minutes we got a lift, taken by a guy who used to travel a lot, always hitch hiking. As soon he saw us he stopped and gave us a ride. He wasn't going far but he knew that every kilometer is good enough! Now driving his own car he wanted to ... read more

A quick visit to Riga This morning I woke up at 5:30 and headed out, in pitch darkness, to the bus station (I'm amazing with directions when I'm alone!). I bought a ticket for the 6:30 bus to Riga, and I was a little concerned that I felt a bit "crook" (as David would say), but there was a bathroom on the bus, which I didn't end up using but it put my mind at ease. The ride took about 4 hours and I slept a good chunk of it. I arrived in Riga at 10:30 and decided to catch the 12:30 bus out of town, so I could at least say I spent 2 hours in Latvia. I think Riga gets a bit of a bad rap: it wasn't much to look at, but it ... read more

My bus arrived into Riga at about 5 in the afternoon. I headed to the tourist info and convinced the lady to let me use the phone to call my couch surfing host. I talked to her and she said that she would come pick me up in an hour. We agreed to meet in front of the opera house. So I had an hour to walk around a bit. My first stop was..a McDonalds. Never...ever....in my life have I eaten at McDonalds twice in the same day, but in different countries. The experience was something I will never forget. From McDonalds I went to the opera house and waited. My host, Ieva, arrived and we drove to the apartment that her and her boyfriend Gitas live at. She had to run to her parents shortly ... read more

So Lelde and I have just got back from spending two weeks at her grandparents' farm, deep in the Latvian countryside. 32 per cent of Latvians live in rural areas#. I think that Latvians have strong and thriving traditions related to the land. Whilst there, we went mushroom picking, which Lelde's mum describes as nearly being a national sport in Latvia- you can often see people coming from the forest with a basket full of senes(mushrooms) after an early morning hunt. It makes me think how in Britain most people wouldn't know what they were looking at when it comes to fungus- perhaps we're more removed from the source of our food- harvesting it in the supermarkets. So we got back to nature and experienced farm labour and farm life- mostly- and I like this, the ... read more

After a couple of days in Riga we decided that it was time to see some greenery and head to the countryside, so we jumped on a train and headed to Sigulda in the Guaja National Park, 50km east of Riga. Arriving in the early afternoon, we had plenty of time to explore the little town. We stumbled across the 'bobsleigh' run, which we had a couple of goes on, although i wasn't too keen on the chair lift back to the top! This is sport number three in the Evans training for 2012, never content with a steady run, Tom insisted on flying to the end, although the dismount was less graceful! After an afternoon of physical activities, we found the local cafe for a cold wet refreshment, and being only 75p a pint, we ... read more

Riga is Fantastic! We arrived here on Wednesday morning feeling rather dehydrated and tired after our impromptu drinking session in Leipaja the night before, however we were met with smiling faces at our hotel and a lovely breakfast in a nearby cafe, enough to set us up for a days sightseeing. Riga (we were told by our drinking buddy the night before) is one of the "greats" and despite this rather dramatic build up we were not dissapointed, the architecture grand but equally precise, the cafe culture something more like Barcelona or Paris than the former soviet union and the range of restaurants reminding us of London. We visited the museum of the occupation of Latvia, which gives a detailed explanation of the history of the country from 1939 to 1991, chilling, intriguiging, we learnt things ... read more

So we cheated! It appears Baltic train services are quite what they used to be when Mr Stalin and his pals were in charge. Trains aren't what one would call "regular" and quite often although the tracks are there no vehicle ever travels down them. We decided that instead of three 3-4 hour train journeys, a few hours in Vilnius and then an overnight stopover in a place that our guidebook doesn't even mention we would take the two hour bus across the Lithuanian/Latvian border. We cheated but stumbled upon Leipaja. Leipaja is Latvia 3rd City and was once a major naval port for both the germans and the soviets during the WWII. Nowadays it a mixture of crumbling Soviet decay and new sparkling buildings that are being built in the wake of it being dubbed ... read more
