There I was, standing tall at mail call and it must have been my lucky day because the mail clerk called my name. “Dobie, you got you a small package, looks like it’s from Hawaii,” she hollered out. I was running fast trying to get to my very first package here in Kosovo. On the outside of the package there was a contents listing and it read “Coconut”. Now why in the world would anybody send me a coconut over here in the Balkans? I was so excited I ripped into it like it was Christmas all over again! Much to my surprise inside the box contained “Coconut”, not a coconut…
Oh my gosh, was she ever cute! Her eyes were so big and round and she had this smile that was sweet and sincere. I looked around the box and there was a note attached that read, “Hello, my name is Coconut and I am from the island of Kauai. I have been reading your blog about your travels in Kosovo and I cannot help but want to join you in your adventures. I saw that you have flown a plane and ridden in helicopters and do many Army
things with all your friends from across the United States. In Hawaii I live a very calm and quiet life. I have flowers of many kinds in my back yard, giant bougainvilleas, the state flower of Hibiscus and the ever present scent of the islands, the plumeria. There are birds and trees and groves of fruits and nuts, and of course there are tourists everywhere. So I thought that I would convince my friends to put me in this box and send me over to a different country so that I could experience being a tourist. Please show me the sights of Kosovo and allow me to be part of your journey!”
Yippidy do! Someone to hang out with all the time. Someone to be responsible for and to introduce to all my friends and the activities that I do over here in Kosovo. Well I figured that I would start our friendship out good and we could go out to a fine meal on the town. I’d never been out to a “real” restaurant in Kosovo so I found some of my buddies and they were more than eager to have a little food adventure.
I couldn’t
believe it, there was a fancy place just five miles down the road! They call it the “Castle”, and it was absolutely perfect. Tableclothes, curtains on the windows, and a waiter who was attentive and spoke some English. It was a real treat to go with my Army friends, they were in amazement at how good the food was and to watch them was fun. They all acted like they were being spoiled. I guess that messhall food gets a bit old after a while. I can tell you truthfully that the three cheese noodle dish that me and Coconut shared was by far the best meal I’ve had in months.
The best part about the little excursion was to be able to introduce her to some of the locals and Coconut was able to experience how kind the Kosovo people are to us soldiers. So I’m gonna go for now and start planning for some fun travels to take Coconut on. This is about the best surprise that could show up in the mail!
See you soon!
Dobie
