Bonjourno from Venieza,
We certainly picked a good time to come here --- in the middle of a heat wave!
What an amazing time surrounded by so much history. It is a toss up which I have enjoyed more Rome or Venice. Both are beautiful in diferent ways but different ways. It was great touringaround on the water buses today with the breeze to cool off as we explored the outer islands. There is so much beautiful glass everywhere in every imaginable colour. There are little streets meaderingin all directions but eventually you end up back at the grand canal. We are staying in a hostel that used to be a wealthy gentlemans house- very nice.
Rome was amazing, so old but so proud of its history. It was unreal to walk through St Peters square which I was watchingat the movies recently. It is huge and the church itself is massive, up to 40 storeys high in the dome of St Peters Basilica and 183 m long. The Colosseum is an amazingbuilding and the guide on the tour very informative about how it used to operate as an entertainment venue. It was interesting to hear how successive generations have used the materials of ealier times for new buildings and much of the pagan bulidings have not been retained by the early Chrisitians as not considered worthy.
I have not got to working out how to upload photos yet, perhaps next time. Jules there are some photos on Lauras facebook and she was going to put you in to access it. We had thunderstorms Monday & Tuesday evening in Rome and a little rain. Mum there is no way you would be able to get around anywhere we have visited so far as rough paving and steps everywhere, no such thing as ramps. Rob I hope the the after effects of todays visit are not too bad.
Another day in Venice tomorrow and then onto Tuscany on Saturday. When we sat down to breakfast this morning there was an Aussie couple at the table from Geelong and with contacts in Bendigo. Small world!
Time to crash on another warm night.
Love to all
Ros
