I couch surfed with a kid named Marco at his parent’s house in Treviso. Treviso is a small medieval suburb near Venice, Italy. It used to be under the rule of the Venetian Empire and is built around and somewhat on top of two rivers. I learned quickly that the Venetians loved building in places they knew they shouldn’t (namely: water). I was again going to avoid Venice but after 6 times of being at the station I decided I should probably go and see what all the fuss is about.
I thought I would be able to get to Venice on the 8th of August, directly from Pula, but traffic was so bad from Pula to Trieste that my bus was 3 hours late and I had to go straight to Treviso just to make it on time. I arrived around 6 and met Marco at the train station. We went home, had some dinner and then returned into town and walked around. My batteries in my camera died so I was only able to take a few photos, but the night was really relaxing and nice. The center is surrounded by a loop in one river and in
on top of another river and outside the corner of one section they meet. The meeting is famous because of a few lines Dante wrote in one of his poems. We had some ice cream and returned for sleep.
The next day we packed sandwiches and took the early train to Venice. If you don’t know that much about Venice that is okay, the most important thing to know is that the city is on the water. At first you think, okay it is on the water, but it is not until your train goes out into the middle of the sea and you see the land disappear that you realize Venice is ON the water.
Like Paris everything looks important, even the dullest buildings look like palaces (until you find out that they are a grocery store or a post office). In Venice there are no roads, only walking paths and the canals that all the boats drive in. It is super expensive throughout the whole city and no one wants to live their because of it. Every year they experience more and more flooding and more of the city is destroyed. St. Marco’s Square is world
famous and is naturally the biggest attraction in the city. I can’t tell you much about it because I don’t have a guide book. To be honest I didn’t think I’d be stepping foot in Italy again and I’m still kind of shocked I actually did. The flights to Ireland were cheaper from Venice so I figured it might be a nice way to spend the weekend. And it was.
We walked around Venice for a few hours and then returned to Treviso for a nap. After a quick sleep we took our bicycles around Treviso and biked along the river and through the center. We returned to eat and then I fell asleep…not feeling to well.
The next day I flew into Frankfurt, Germany.
