Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

Perugia!! Europe » Italy » Umbria » Perugia
SO! My first entry! I have been here since friday, and I know that could write pages and pages but i am going to stick with today. The reason I haven't been able to start my journal till now is because I have no internet in my apartment! Something that immediately reminds me that i am no longer in the U.S., instead I am writing this in the internet cafe close to my apartment. Let me just briefly explain my apartment. IT IS HUGGGGE! It has about 7 rooms with high ceilings, and an upstairs where the laundry room is. It [View Full Entry]

Citta Della Pieve. Europe » Italy » Umbria
I am in Italy! Citta della Pieve to be exact. From a town outside of Paris, namely Nemours. Darek and i scored a ride to Milan, (well this is the extremely abreviated version of the story) and from Milan took a train to Chuisi then walked to Citta della Pieve... yes a train. "No hitchhiking" signs dominated the highway outside of Milan, as well as a conspicuous police station. This is so weird. Today I attended my school for a quick visit and reunited with many characters I havent seen in a year. It was in many ways quite comforting, to [View Full Entry]

Hey : ) I've leaving for Italy on Wednesday, so I thought I'd make this and keep everyone updated! I hate the layout but you know. I won't have an address until I arrive in Perugia and I do have a cell phone, but it costs money of course, so I won't give that out unless anyone requests it. My Skype name is Ociana09 , so add me there instead and we'll talk : ) Here are a few pictures: [View Full Entry]

Finals week Europe » Italy » Umbria » Perugia
I'm pretty busy this week. I had five finals. I now only have one left, and it's Friday morning Italian. I just thought I'd put up pictures from the Christmas lights around town. They're all basically the same picture/place; I was aiming for pictures that weren't blurry. It's Corso Vannucci, Piazza IV Novembre/the fountain. [View Full Entry]

We finished the olive harvest at San Fortunato November 27. the family took morgan, jenna and i to a great seafood ristorante tucked high in the hills(strange for seafood) called 'piccolo mondo'. They also finally showed us the chapel on the farm where the monks met for mass. We didnt have a farm lined up because we had finished the olive harvest earlier than expected. luckily though, morgan's friendliness and charm got a friend of the family to invite us to stay with her for a few days. Rosella had stopped by to help with the olive harvest once or twice [View Full Entry]

Ciao a tutti. I don't know if my Mom has gotten to you first or I'm actually going to be the one to tell everyone. Last night Dateline NBC (a news show) taped a pizza workshop that Umbra set up for us. Dateline is doing a show on students in Perugia. In light of the murder that happend in Perugia last month the press is attempting to highlight what life in Perugia is like for American students. They will air the show on December 21st. I think Dateline is on during the weekend (Friday or Saturday night). Several of us from [View Full Entry]

Thanksgiving table
Thanksgiving table
Perugia Thanksgiving!
I'll start with this last weekend and work backwards. (This entry is backdated, since I wrote most of it in a word document last week.) There is a train strike in France going on, which made me a little nervous, because I was taking an overnight train to visit Ann. I knew I was going to want to see someone from home around Thanksgiving, and, though I’m sure I would have been fine, it was really nice to know I was headed to see Ann when I was feeling particularly homesick Thursday evening. I left my apartment around seven and went [View Full Entry]

Well, we managed to put together a pretty good Thanksgiving dinner. We all made a different dish or dishes and we even managed to have cranberry sauce from a can thanks to Shandra's boy friend who came to visit the other week. We managed to eat almost everything because we don't have room for leftovers in our fridges or microwaves to heat anything up. The most intersting item on our table had to be the gravy. It turned out purple! Kind of reminded us of Dr. Seuss. It actually was very good as was all of the food. I'm actually very [View Full Entry]

Happy Thanksgiving! Europe » Italy » Umbria » Perugia
November just wouldn't be the same with out Thanksgiving, and even though I know I will have a make-up thanksgiving I helped throw one of my own. It ended up being amazing and THANK YOU Gail for you carrot recipe. Everyone loved them, and 2 people who hated carrots wanted the recipe and more. lol So we had no actual bird cause they don't sell turkeys in Italy, along with cranberry sauce, so Kara got turkey breasts instead and made her famous mashed potatoes. Everything went amazing and I have never eaten so much in my life...I was full all weekend [View Full Entry]
