Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

Rome is over and now we're off to the country. Right now we are killing time in the Spoleto train station until our bus comes. We took the train from Rome this am--so far so good. I had booked us seats that were back to back by mistake but the train wasn't full so we just sat elsewhere. No problemo. Short trip of about an hour and a half. Squirrel just called our host and she said she would have lunch ready when we got there. Awesome! Meanwhile I haven't had my morning espresso (you should be proud, Joe, I'm drinking [View Full Entry]

After six months of constant travel I was ready for something different. I landed in Rome on the 3rd of February and within a couple of days I had been caught be every tourist trap and was ready for the countryside. The Roma -> Florence train dropped me about halfway in a small town called Chuisi where I was picked up and taken to Campo Grande. In the hills of Umbria Campo Grande is an organic farm that has one farmer, two dogs, four donkeys, five chickens, eight cats, and countless olive, walnut, cherry, fig, peach, and apple trees. I found [View Full Entry]

O the weather Europe » Italy » Umbria » Perugia
Ok so I really do not have much to talk about but i feel obligated to write a blog anyway. So yesterday Natalie and I went to Church, man was that an experience. Natalie had nooo idea what was going on, but i was pretty proud of myself for getting the gist of the message, although I think that church is more for learning things other than the gist, but we went and that is what counts. In church I also made myself pray in Italian, boy my parents and especially grandma would be proud. I guess one of my goals [View Full Entry]

Assisi Europe » Italy » Umbria » Assisi
We went to Assisi the first weekend here for orientation. Assisi is absolutely gorgeous, even in neverending rain! It is so clean and beautiful that it almost seems like a fake town on a movie set or something. The streets are small and fairly easy to navigate. It is very easy to just wander around (there aren't even any stoplights). The first day my group had a workshop and some freetime. Even though it was pouring and freezing, we decided to walk around the town and find some caffe. We found a really pretty little pastry shop and got some delicious [View Full Entry]

Yesterday was pretty rainy here in Roma... and true to "when in Rome..." I stayed indoors and enjoyed some time relaxing. I guess Romans melt in the rain, but I certainly didn't mind a day of sleeping in. Later that evening I got to see the Colosseum. It was beautiful at night, and so calm because not very many people decided to venture out to see it after the rain. I also had my first gelato, some sort of chocolate hazelnut I think, which was amazing! Today we took a trip to the hill town, Todi, in Umbria. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. [View Full Entry]

another interesting day Europe » Italy » Umbria » Perugia
Ok so today so far was an interesting day, my roommates and I went to class at 9 for Italian, but instead of learning grammar the class was assigned different tasks to perform through out the city. So Franceso, our Professor comes aroundto my group and says someone who is lucky pick from the stack of papers, and what paper you get determines your task. So of course I pick it and get the only task that doesn’t require buying something! So we don’t get money! So instead we get to go around and look at signs and figure out when [View Full Entry]

first club outing Europe » Italy » Umbria » Perugia
Ok so last night was hilarious!!! Before going out my roommates and I went next door to our neighbors and drank some Limoncello, soo Italian and soooooo strong!! But I still liked it. After about an hour we all headed over to Merlins a Pizzeria/Pub/Club. As soon as we got there one of the guys that worked there, I guess I really don’t know who he was, gave all us girls shots of something that tasted like cough syrup!! Yuck! But whatever. We stood around for awhile and then my roommates and I snatched a table and ordered some drinks, I [View Full Entry]

hello... Europe » Italy » Umbria » Perugia
I figure i could go to a few places in Italy but I have already seen most of Italy, i think the only places in Italy I want to see are Sicilia, Sanremo and Capri, maybe Calabria I am not so sure! But I know I am going to go to Torino and Aielli a few times to visit family, i think that will be the best part! SO the past day have been pretty boring, pretty much all we do in the first week is go to Italian for 4 hours and then cook something or go out to eat. [View Full Entry]
