Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

Okay so after our hostel in Magione we got dropped off at the train station with these two British guys who were backpacking...they were hilarious cause they didn't really know what they were doing, but I guess we were kinda in the same boat with them! So we figured out how to get the train to Perugia, got there and hopped on a bus. Perugia is a very hilly town and is fairly spread out. We didn't really know where the center was so we stayed on the bus for like an hour and got a nice little tour of the [View Full Entry]

Assisi On Saturday our group went on a day trip to Assisi. Assisi is famous for St. Francis of Assisi and St. Clare. We took a two and a half hour bus ride there. We had a guided tour of the Basilica of St. Clare, and the Basilica of St. Francis. The churces were gorgeous inside and outside. We were also able to see both of their tombs. It was again very nice to have a guide to take us around and explain everything to us. My favorite part was at the exit of St. Francis' Basilica. There was this huge [View Full Entry]

May 23, 24, 25, 2008 SPOLETO, Italy After 2 good long days on the road we arrived at Spoleto with an overnight in Cosenza. Spoleto is a town we drove through on our last visit to Italy and at that time we decided we would have to come back for a longer visit to check it out. This town has a lot of old Roman history with a very famous and very high ( 80 meters and 230 meters long ) Roman aqueduct that crosses a large valley. Known as Ponte delle Torre. As usual there are the way too many [View Full Entry]

May 14, 2008 ORVIETO, Italy This morning we drove from Livorno, after a quiet evening and night aboard the ferry from Sardinia, to Orvieto, Italy. Orvieto is a very interesting hilltop city that has been occupied for thousands of years. The city is home to a very famous cathedreal, and an important example of neo-gothic architecture, that is the highlite of the city. The city has buildings from midevial times as well as ruins from much older times. Old Orvieto was saved from bombing in the second world war because of the Cathedral but all the newer areas surrounding the old [View Full Entry]

Italia Grandiosa - 8 May 2008 - Orvieto Woke up at 6 today. Packed my bags and had breakfast. We left at 8.30 towards Orvieto. It was a long drive to Orvieto. We stopped at an Autogrill for some coffee. I bought salami and a ham to take with me. At 12.00 we arrived at Orvieto. Orvieto is a small town on a cliff. At Orvieto we took a pull train up to town. We walked towards the cathedral and went to a restaurant close to it to have lunch. Lunch was very average, but the wine was good. After lunch [View Full Entry]

I got up at 6 am. Didn’t want to bother with breakfast again, so I skipped it. Packed my bags and we left at 7.30 towards Assisi. We drove for around 3 hours before we were at Assisi. We stopped for 30 minutes at an Autogrill, a kind of road restaurant. There were a lot of school kids there too, because this is the season where most schools are taking their school trips. At the Autogrill I bought a sandwich. Funny thing in Italy is that if you want to buy a coffee, or sandwich, you first stand in line to [View Full Entry]

Finally, our time of travel begins. Lucy's been in Rome for two months and I've been for one, which has created a home away from home feeling. It's been great, but there's so much more to see in Italy! We've decided to spend the last month travelling around, and our first jaunt is to the small mountain town of Orvieto, where Lucy's Uncle Nigel makes his home. In preparation, Lucy's Father Iain flies out to Rome and we spend the day sight seeing, with weather showing it's slightly foreboding hand by dropping hail on us in the morning. Yes, hail. There's [View Full Entry]

We've stayed in Rome instead of heading to Orvieto for the sole purpose of seeing the Pope lead a procession celebrating the stations of the cross on Easter Friday. The cool bit is that makes a speech in front of the colisseum next to a flaming cross, then leads the cross inside, simulating the stations along the way. As cool as this sounds, I found some pictures on the internet and it seemed a bit prosaic. Cool or not, the damned thing got rained out. Instead of going, we grabbed desserts and liqueur and headed of to Orvieto a day early. [View Full Entry]

Gorgeous. You can't help but be at peace with the world in such a beautiful place.
After going through a tough breakup with Paris, I've lately had a wonderful time rediscovering my obsession with Italy. I did love France, but Italy simply has the best of everything. The best March weather, the best food, the best coffee (Starbucks is based off Italian coffee shops after all). Then there's the exquisite churches and museums, the alluring street markets and the most exquisitely beautiful countryside I've ever seen. I'm still completely happy with my decision to study here, and classes are also going very well. Since my grades from this semester transfer back to Drake as credit [View Full Entry]

so after a rainy start to a Friday morning, we slowly made our way to Umbria... a region in central Italy, and the only one that doesn't touch water! we went first to Perugia, which unfortunately, it was FREEZING cold and rainy... and at certain times, it was flurrying. We spent nearly the entire day inside of a museum, bored to tears looking at picture after picture of Mary with the Baby Jesus. The entire exhibition was the Madonna pictures. Yes they were very beautiful pieces of artwork, however they were EVERYWHERE in EVERY version! from Perugia we went to a [View Full Entry]
