Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

A village town that specializes in olive oils and old traditions like taking the time to sit and chat with your neighbor.
We took a one day bus trip into the Province of Umbria. The highlight was the mountain top town of Civita. The pictures tell part of the story... [View Full Entry]

Here is my room--pretty spacious, desk, closet space, etc.
Hello everyone! Ok this is day two in Italy, but I just moved into my apartment today with my roommate; we stayed the first night in a hotel. My flight had two stops so I made a stop in Denver, which was ok. The flight across the Atlantic was about 10 hours and I couldn't really sleep, so that wasn't really fun. I had a stop in Munich, where I missed my next flight, and had to wait for the next one to Rome. Finally, once in Rome we left on a bus that took us to Perugia (4hours) I think [View Full Entry]

Under the Tuscan Sun....... I understand why this book found it's inspiration here. One cannot help but notice how shadowy the lanes of these villages are. To an outsider it is often daunting, odd. But the shadow, while staving off the unbelievable heat, gives an air of mystique. Of course in medieval times, when fortresses & walls were erected to keep the residents safe (here for example- Etruscans against Romans, and later Tuscans against Perugians) the public had no choice to to be packed in. The hilltop is only so big. Here in Castiglione del Lago one is greeted by dozens [View Full Entry]

Good Lawd I'm in Heaven!!!!! Benvenuto alla terra dei tartufi !!!!!!!!!! Welcome to the land of truffles!!!!! Woooo Black Truffles!!! With my hearts desire I embrace Umbria for all it holds. Have you ever eaten with your eyes closed? It is a Must-Do in Umbria! A comment about the following photos-- I'm not religious, I'm not one for pomp & circumstance. I am however Christian, as I feel I would be a right fool not to leave the door open to possibility. How would one explain @ the end of time "I just couldn't 'go' for it". Ignorance. Ego. Foolhardy.

Visit From Old Friends Europe » Italy » Umbria

Karl & Asha and Antonello & Ludovica, next to the main house
A very lazy Sunday afternoon was spent with Antonello, Barbara, Federico (6) and Ludavica (4), visiting from Rome. It was relaxed spent around the BBQ, the pool and visiting the animals on the farm. The two girls got on very, very well, exchanging favourite toys as tokens of affection, whilst the boys played ball. We have planned little interaction with friends over this trip, deciding not to take too much time away from just the four of us, but seeing the Morani clan was a lovely day, old stories and laughs, and sharing a beer in the Italian sun. After they [View Full Entry]

Onita on Onita's Health Europe » Italy » Umbria
Well - the only give away to anybody we meet is the very short hair appearing and how skinny I still am, but other than that who would know I had this disease at all. I feel so un believably fit, sometimes appearing fitter than the rest of the family as I make them go on walks up and down the Umbrian country side. Is it the sunshine, the careful planning of my drug regime or just sheer enthusiasm for life, who knows but it works, and I feel as fit, actually no, fitter and healthier than last summer. Long may [View Full Entry]

Amazing restaurant (see text) in Castiglione del Lago. Asha and Jay liked the very old table, out of use and falling apart
A visit to a huge lake, just down from Castiglione del Lago. The guide book had recommended a particular restaurant in town for a local traditional dish of white bean stew and the carp caught in the lake, so we headed there for lunch. The town was glorious, in what seems to be the usual Umbrain style, built ontop of a hill, we drove and parked and went straight to eat. We loved the restaurant and those white beans, cooked in a broth and served with what ever, Karl chose Pork, Onita had the Carp. Then on for a Gelato, which [View Full Entry]
