Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

Buona sera from Umbria Italy! I have not had much luck accessing the internet in the last week. In Rome- I was too sleep deprived- or too busy seeing the Vatican. In Bari, where we stayed the night before we began our bike trip, I did not try, and at the 3 “hotels” we stayed at during our bike trip, only one “truly” had an Internet connection—and that one had the one computer—for all of the guests at the hotel! We are having a great time in Italy. We are travelling with our long time friends Jim and Lacey Marchetti. Jim [View Full Entry]

So here are some random happenings that have occurred around Perugia apart from traveling. I went to the Saturday Market down by the stadium two weeks ago after I came back from my field trip from Rome. I went with a girl from school named Katie and we left pretty early so we could see everything without the crouds. THere was everything there: clothes, meat, produce, house wares, and even...animals. There was a stand that was selling hampsters, duckies, puppies, and roosters! I was so close to buying a puppy or a ducky, I wanted one so bad, they were just [View Full Entry]

COFFEE!
COFFEE!
this is the coffee I tried!
This entry is just about some things I have done while here in Perugia during the week--otherwise I don't think all of my pictures would load... Ok this last week was pretty eventful I went to a coffee seminar through school, the Opera, and to Tandem (a group where we get together and speak with local Italians). The coffee seminar was led by Zach, the guy who organizes most of our local cultural activities, and we went to a cafe here in Perugia for about an hour to learn about the history of coffee and how the Italians drink it. Some [View Full Entry]

The time is 02.30 a.m., Thursday September 11. I'm sitting on a rock outside Tuval's gate, the smell of refet wafting into my nostrils. It shouldn't have been. I should have been in a taxi on my way to Yoni's, on our way to the airport, on our way to Umbria. And Yoni isn't answering his phone. His secretary was meant to have ordered a taxi to pick me up from Tuval at 2.15 and Yoni from Manof at 2.45, but she got her A.M's and P.M's mixed up. A great start to our holiday. So, at 2.45 Susan was dragged [View Full Entry]

Perugia, day two Europe » Italy » Umbria » Assisi
It rained overnight and Saturday started as a grey morning. We had a deadline of 9:00 am to return the hirecar to the local airport, so that was the focus of our morning. We were on our way, following the instructions dictated by the GPS. "recalculating...."oops, not again. Sometimes the most direct route is the tiniest of back streets. Roadblock. "recalculating....." silence. then more silence. "sorry, can't calculate new route..." blank screen. blank screen and silence. bugger, look for signs. Yes, the airport! all good, hand the keys back and no more driving for a wh [View Full Entry]

Tuesday Night Concert
Tuesday Night Concert
Here are all the people in Piazza IV Novembre on a Tuesday Night. Crazy.
Here are just some other random things that have been going on here in Perugia during the week. I started my actual classes on Wednesday and am finished with the intensive Italian week. Classes seem to be going well other than my ridiculously awful schedule. My classes are later in the day than I would prefer; I am used to having class in the morning and being done early in the afternoon, but this semester I don't even start class until 11am and sometimes I am not done until 7pm. This will take some getting used to. On Tuesday, there was [View Full Entry]

It was an early start, but it was worth it. We fitted in a few hours in Siena and still arrived in Perugia in time to have a look around before it got too dark (8:00 pm) Siena is a lovely city, full of cathedrals & museums, but we could only spend a few hours wandering the old streets in the centre of town. We tried to contact Henry a couple of times, but the we couldn't get thru to him on the local phone system. We visited the Piazza del Campo and were amazed at its size & the number [View Full Entry]

On Saturday I had my first trip outside Perugia. I went with about 9 other people to Assisi, a town about 25 minutes east of Perugia by train. We left Perugia at 10:30am from the Train station. It was really easy to get on the train and go. All we had to do was buy tickets at the electronic booth and then validate them before we got on the train. The train was pretty comfortable and was really quick and the tickets only cost about 5 euro roundtrip. In Assisi I saw Il Basilico da San Rufino, Rocca Maggiore (a castle), [View Full Entry]

Ok All-- I have gone around Perugia a bit and taken some pictures that I will Post on here and I also took some videos too! They will help you get a better idea of where I am and what it is like here. The last few days I have been in class for the "intensive Italian" week where we only take Italian class that prepares us for our future course and then there is a "getting around town" section that sends us on excursions where we, guess what, learn how to get around town! For one excursion we went to [View Full Entry]
