Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

Hello from Assisi. This morning we woke up early at around 7:45, boarded a train, and traveled 3 hrs by bus to a small town north east of Rome called Assisi. The town was much quieter then 2 years ago when I went during the summer of 2006 when it was tourist season. This time the pictures were easier to snap without getting random people and everything seemed more tranquil. Our tour guide was excellent and we learned a great deal about the history of Saint Francis of Assisi who gave up his noble life to live with the poor and [View Full Entry]

So we woke up early in Assisi and spent about an hour on the bus before up in Perugia. We started the tour off by walking through this so called via (street). It was a fortress used by the pope AGAINST the people of Perugia. As the story goes the church wanted to tax the people of Italy and the people of Perugia wanted none of it. They stood up against the church. After the pope sent an army to conquer the city, the pope built a fortress at the top to fire cannons down among the people if they did [View Full Entry]

Trip to Assisi Europe » Italy » Umbria » Assisi
So I had to wake up at 7 to prepare for the weekend trip to Assisi! All the IES students looked groggy as we waited to board the bus, on which I immediately passed out and woke up in the beautiful town of Assisi. The town was very quiet compared to when I last visited, probably due to the fact that right now isn’t a very big time for tourists to visit. We went on a tour of the churches - St. Francesco Basilica and St. Chiara Basilica - in Assisi. Our tour guide was very nice and a lot more [View Full Entry]

we had two little chickens so we all got to pull on wishbones
Thanksgiving was a pretty big deal to most of the American students that were spending the holiday in Perugia. We all tried to make the most of it by cooking a large dinner. For many of us this was our first big holiday away from our families so everyone called home and tried to track down their favorite recipes to make the holiday special. Finding the recipes was not the problem, but finding the ingredients for the food was a big problem! Many Italian dishes do not use the same spices as American dishes and trying to explain stuffing and pumpkin [View Full Entry]

FELIZ 2009 PRA TODOS!!!

I was caught off guard
I would like to start off this blog entry by saying "Thank you" to all you following my blog. I have recieved many wonderful messages of encouagement from you and am truly thankful. Please continue to keep reading and sending messages, I love hearing from all of you! Halloween came and went in Perugia without much notice. Halloween in Italy is not that big of a thing, but anything that somewhat reminds me of home is kind of a big deal. My roommates and I wanted to have a pumpkin carving night, but they were really expensive at the grocery store. [View Full Entry]

Getting Ready

The Saturday after returning from Fall break I participated in the largest chocolate festival I have ever seen! Eurochocolate takes place in Perugia every year and for about a week the streets of the city center are filled with venders selling every form of chocolate ever imaginged. My roommate Jackie and I braved the crowds to go experience the amazingness that can only be created by mass amounts of chocolate. First we geared up by going to Cafe Morlacchi and ate some croissants and I drank a hot chocolate, because what else do you drink during the Eurochocolate? We entered Piazza [View Full Entry]

Me and Jasmine
On Friday I visited Perugia for the annual Chocolate festival with Olivia and Jasmine. We had a great day in spite of spending about 6 hours on trains. Perugia was nice, although I am finding that the more I visit other Italian towns and cities, the more fiercely loyal to Bologna I feel. Possibly because without exception, everytime I have left Bologna, I have had some sort of allergic reaction (a bit like hayfever), which has led me to believe I get withdrawal symptoms… Also, (and yes, some are going to hate me for saying this) I cannot help but think [View Full Entry]
