Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

This is my first time in Italy. I went to visit Anna Laura in Umbria, in Central Italy. She lives in a small village called Castel Rigone, overlooking Lake Trasimeno. I also visited the capital city of the Umbria region, Perugia. Not only is Perugia a wonderful city with an ecletic mix of etruscan, medieval and renaissance architecture, but it is also the home of the famous Baci Perugina chocolates. [View Full Entry]

Chapter 11 Goings on in the night Once the Australian chap had switched off the light, it seemed a more comfortable night was indeed possible. Not a word of it! The Japanese started snoring again and two of the stooges kept coming in and out of the room. They were muttering profanities loud enough for the ozzie chap to hear and respond with a giggle. Martin was slowly but surely losing his temper until having gone in and out of the room at least twenty times, they finally did hit the sack and some sleep was achieved. That was until about [View Full Entry]

...just off the Fortress Ruins.
Just off the autostrada, Orvieto is no secret, but worth the visit. Here you'll see the Cathedral, drink Classico wine and shop for ceramics. Also, a commanding view of the valley from the Fortress ruins. [View Full Entry]

Hey folks! Como estao as coisas por ai? Aqui tudo caminhando.
