Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

three days in Umbria... Europe » Italy » Umbria » Perugia
Well we finally got to the place and event that sent us to Italy in the first place, a wedding. The villa that everyone stayed at was incredible. It had a pool and was surrounded by hills, and driving around we discovered there was an infinite amount of little towns, each with their own unique character. The wedding itself was in Assissi, a beautiful little town on the side of a mountain. For you travelers out there I would strongly encourage staying in the Umbria region, so much to see and do, and so much calmer and laid back then [View Full Entry]

Day Five (Wednesday) Europe » Italy » Umbria » Assisi
Today's goal was to reach Rome. We were up early once again and again the breakfast sucked. No wonder I'm eating these big lunches everyday. We would be spending the next two nights just outside Rome at the ATA Domina Hotel. On the way to Rome we opted for a side excursion to visit Assisi. This is one of the prettiest abbeys in Europe. It takes up most of the top of the hill and seems to dwarf the town. [View Full Entry]

Hill Towns of Italy Europe » Italy » Umbria » Orvieto
TA here - FINALLY. Seems my timing with the internet cafes has been as futile as my timing with the Italian siestas. If you are hungry anytime between 1 - 4, then forget it! These people have something going on here...they know when to get OUT OF THE HEAT! Today I am writing from Orvietto...an incredibly beautiful town perched atop a rock outcropping, accessible by a funky cable car that takes you straight uphill. Debe and I took a short side trip today into the town of Civita di Bagnoregio. This town has a population of 14. We had to hike [View Full Entry]

The Prayer of St. Francis Europe » Italy » Umbria » Assisi
Lord make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, joy. I went to a Catholic school for most of my education, and there was a seminary next door which was named after St. Francis. I knew that he liked animals. But otherwise St. Francis to me meant the place where the brothers and the sisters of the seminary lived. Assisi is a small town, and just as some people [View Full Entry]

Ieri, siamo andati a Assisi. It was lovely. And it was the first of a bunch of trips our program is taking us on, so the transportation was free! well.. kind of. pre-paid would probably be more accurate. Assisi is in Umbria which is a region in the center of Italy, directly north of Lazio, the region that Rome is in. Umbria is really really popular, Perugia is in Umbria and i'm pretty sure there was a movie made about it. So it wasn't too far away, it was something like two hours on a bus. i'm not totally sure because [View Full Entry]

It was exactly my month "anniversary" yesterday. (sigh) abt 3 more months to go. Even with the slowness of time here, the weeks are going by so fast. So, I've realized I'm not very prompt in writing in my Travelblog. And it isn't so much that I'm ridicously busy or traveling everywhere. I remain in Rome for about an month. With only a few trips here and there to the Historical Center or walks in the Park, I feel I'm only just beginning. I'm quite overwhelmed alone with what's found here in Rome. The moment I start to take for granted [View Full Entry]

Shopping in Florence Europe » Italy » Umbria » Perugia
this past friday i went to florence with my roommate jennie from bates college. we went shopping at these high end outlets. they were kind of a disappointment because they were pretty expensive. it was fun though because jennie and i really like hanging out together and we get along really well. we were both able to buy some christmas gifts for people. we went out to dinner at this amazing restaurant. it was not a touristy kind of place, all italians there. the food was great, and so was the wine. we stayed overnight in a really nice hotel, it [View Full Entry]

Eurochocolate..... Europe » Italy » Umbria » Perugia
Welcome to the week when i gain about twenty pounds. From October 15 until the 24th is the annual Eurochocolate Festival which is always held in Perugia. Yesterday was kicked off with the carving of 4 enormous chocolate blocks, the chocolate that is chipped away is given out to the crowd. It was literally an over 80 riot. All these crazy old women were trying to knock me down to get to the free goods. THEY WERE INSANE. I almost lost my leg in the safety fence because it got wedged in between two metal bars and then i was knocked [View Full Entry]

I am here in Assisi, which is just beautiful. Its a bit sunny for me, but most of those reading this blog would say it is beyond belief perfect weather. I guess we cant all love the rain. It really has been quite another religious experience for me. Everything is so quiet and calm. Just wonderful. I even went to church this morning (which was PACKED--hello its Saturday morning!). One thing about church. it was packed with all the die hard Italians and me, and all the tourists crowded around the gate to watch us freaks. There was not a vacant [View Full Entry]

Beautiful Umbria

So this morning yet again I tried to rent a scooter before I left on the 5pm bus. But since I didnt have a drivers license i was yet again denied. I about cried right at the rental place. My scooter career is over. So i wondered around on the verge of tears, listening to all the old men greet each other...one more Godfather sounding than the next. So in true Amy fashion, I took standby and got the heck outta that place that only brought me gloom. Now I am in glorious Assisi. It is so beyond beautiful. It is [View Full Entry]
