Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

Yesterday after I got over my mopey self, went to the visitor information centre and got the low down on the chocolate factory. I made the call trying to speak italian but she couldn't get me so she politely told me in English that the factory was closed today and to call tomorrow-aaaaahhhhh! Unfortunatley I am leaving today so no chocolate tour for me although I think it will save me money as so many of you want me to send you some chocolate. I think that I am starting to turn a little Italian as I spent much of yesterday [View Full Entry]

Up in the cold hills Europe » Italy » Umbria » Perugia
Hi all, I am in Perugia and it is cold. I hope you are all enjoying the weather and cricket there. I am staying at a place that is close to one of the most beautiful lookouts. The lady only speaks spanish and she doesn't understand me most of the time but she is very nice and she asked me how tall I was! She is quite small so I must seem like a giant to her. I am still a bit jetlagged, I woke up at three this morning and couldn't sleep at all. There are some very beautiful buildings [View Full Entry]

Assisi, not a sissy! Europe » Italy » Umbria » Assisi
I took the bus to the train station and bought my ticket to Assisi for 1.60 euros. Now, I didn't know much about this city besides that fact that everybody said I should go and check it out. Also, there's many churches including a very large one for San Francesco, a noble man (I forget what he really did...oops). The train ride was about 20-25 minutes. I walked out of the train station and up to a bus stop sign. The route map and schedule was the hardest thing to understand! I stared at the map for about 10 minutes and [View Full Entry]

Okay, so it's about time I blog about my last few days in Perugia, Italy - it didn't end in Venice! Day 1 It was so great to finally hug Marissa and catch up with her. A little background for the readers: Marissa and I worked at The Daily newspaper at my university as classified ad reps. She left in June and the whole office was sad to see her go but excited for her new adventures. She is studying at the university in Perugia for a whole year! That night I arrived I basically just collapsed...that is, before exploring the [View Full Entry]

Sunday, we had to get out of Roma. It's filthy, crowded, noisy, the people are rude, and the food is ho hum. So we hopped a local train to Orvietto, 1 hour away. We took a funiculare to the old city. This hillside town is the summer residence of many of the Popes and dates back to 800 BC when the Etruscans settled. The 13th century Duomo is one of Italy's most beautiful Duomi. It was built to shelter the relic of the Miracle of Bolsena, which happened in 1263 just south of Orvietto. A doubting priest who questioned the sacrement [View Full Entry]

Assisi and then some Europe » Italy » Umbria » Assisi
I don't really have that much to say but I did want to put up some pictures of my trip to Assisi this past weekend. I had a great time with my friend Jen from CUA and Amy Sappenoff from Benedictine College. It was great to see a familiar face from KS! Assisi is an amazing and peaceful place. Right when i got there i could undertand the peaceful mentality that the Fransiscans have a tradition of. It is SO different from Rome, and it was nice to have a change of pace. I loved the small streets and quiet [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone, well we arrived safely at our Band B near Assisi. Our drive out of Rome was interesting. We took a taxi to pick up our car at the airport and there were police and firetrucks and diversions! It seems that four gangsters were killed! We picked up our car and actually made it without two many problems! The scenery in Umbria is incredible, hill towns and views that its hard to describe. I wish we could download pictures but no time right now. We have tried our first truffles! in an omelete. Summer truffles at the moment and they [View Full Entry]

Just a 30 minute drive away from Borgo lies a lake. As this is quite far away from both mediterranean coastlines, this proved to be a very neet alternative indeed to take a dip (and I hate salt water). Just by the lake there is a nice little village inside an old castle. We were there during the weekend, that is usually when there are markets on most italian town squares, which was the case on this nice sunny afternoon. We returned home with some delicious wild boar salami, local olive oil and peroni beer! Cheers! [View Full Entry]
