Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

Before we made it to Assisi we had to stop in a pottery warehouse. I am not certain, but Sebastien said it had something to do with Antonio doing paperwork there or something...either way it was just a reason for the pottery people to get a bus load of tourists into their shop. When we got there a woman walked us around her warehouse and showed us examples of plates and mugs that they hand paint or whatever. Unfortunately for her, I had actually taken a ceramics class last year so I knew the stuff there was way overpriced, so [View Full Entry]

5-22-07 I got up around 7 and decided I better do laundry as I was out of clean clothes unless I wanted to wear my long underwear and sweatshirt. Considering it has been in the 80's, I did not really want to sport that attire. Of course nothing comes easy. I had no change for the laundry machine and ask the front desk for change and they said they had none. I said what? I had already on a couple occasions complained to this hostel and I did not want to press my luck and come across as a complainer. The [View Full Entry]

Oh no! Our last full day in Italy. How to decide what to visit, but more importantly, we had to make sure that we had our final tastes of all the good Italian food. Luckily, because this is Italy, we were pretty sure to land on our feet no matter what we did. And, oh boy, did we land on our feet. We decided to drive out to Orvieto through the Umbrian countryside. Absolutely stunning and, what amazed me, really different from Tuscany. One would think because they are so close together that they would be more or less the same. [View Full Entry]

A sonnet to Florence: Your pink & green marbled churches we admired, Your dense crowds of tourists made us tired. The bright sunshine beat down upon the square, Hey, what’s that guy drawing over there? The air filled with scents of pizza and perfume, (and a few things that stank) The lack of ‘water closets’ made us wary about how many espressos we drank. (Oh my!) House wine & mineral water cascaded over our lips, Each one different - nice to sit & sip! Ah, but we shall miss the shopping on street after street, Staring in wonder at statue [View Full Entry]

Assisi was gorgeous! It was about a 2 and a half hour bus ride, then we had to park in a parking lot outside of the town and take an escalator up to it, since the town is on a hill. We had a tour of the town that ended at St. Francis of Assisi. (They’re big on him there, I wonder why…haha) I think we all would agree that the tour was a bit much. The man was very knowledgeable, but I felt like he was just repeated what he was told to say, instead of speaking to us. It [View Full Entry]

PANDA BEAR Europe » Italy » Umbria » Assisi
Hello all friends and family Since we have been in assisi we have hired a car, a Fiat Panda it is very small with no guts and it struggles to go down hills let alone up. Here everyone drives on the WRONG side of the road so we had a few close calls while we adjusted to the road rules, and still now we are guessing what all the different road sings mean (Casey you would love driving on these roads - however maybe not in the Panda). We went to Spello and Spoleto one day (Spello was a bit crap!) [View Full Entry]

Dear Family and Friends Well we have finally found a pace that suits us, away from the hussel and bussel of Bangkok (not to mention the stress) we arrived in Italy and we decided that we required a break form the big smoke so we bussed it to Perguria, without a dbout the most beautiful place we have ever seen - as usually ill let the photos do the talking however i advise that they do not do the town justice (you will have to visit for your self). After a night in Perguia we went to Assissi where mum had [View Full Entry]

All right, honestly I lied about the date. It's about amonth later than that, but I've been a jaded traveler and if weren't for the prodings of multiple parents I might just have never written anything. But everyone liked my London website SOOO much, I shall have to continue the tradition for my Italy experience. First things first: The flight. It was long. There was a change in time difference, and I played the typically cool outsider with blue hair, avoiding talking to all the lame first time abroad studiers on the flight with me. It has to be noted that [View Full Entry]
