Day 2 Up at 6:00 and after a lovely breakfast we were on the road at 9:00. Our first stop of the day was in the California region of Umbria. What Mike meant was that we left the bus in Los Angeles and headed for Santa Maria degli Angeli. This imposing church (Saint Mary of the Angles) contains the modest chapel of San Francisco (St. Francis). Hence the California reference. The left side of the church was closed except for confessions. The side chapels looked interesting but I forgot all about them because as I walked around I heard singing. It was coming from the modest structure in middle of the church where Mass was going on. The chapel could hold about twenty worshipers and we stopped in the doorway to listen. This is the chapel ... read more

After a dreadful nights sleep we decided to move on and approach our next destination the small medieval hillside town of Todi. Sometimes you have to give in and give up and try something different . And what a little gem Todi was too . Very few people go to Todi and it is sadly overlooked by most visitors. This is a shame for Todi but a joy for us as the place was empty. What a peaceful place - a little piece of heaven. And the sun shone too. The townspeople have recognised the advantage of motorhomers and holidaymakers and the money they bring in to the town. For once it was a joy to go to a town that positively welcomed us in the motorhome and provided decent facilities including water. Parking was provided ... read more

Beautiful gardens at Villa Lante in nearby town of ???? And espresso in the village square with the local townsfolk. Back roads north again and saw subsiding hilltop town Civitta from a totallt differentdirection as we passed through Lubriana. Latzio landscape was quite stark with steep escarpments, landslides, eroded valleys. Almost desert like landscapes in some places. Wound through narrow roads down to the Tiber River and crossed into Umbria. The landscape changed almost immediately into lush, prosperous looking farming land. Found our farmhouse Casale de Corone without too much trouble and settled in. Incredible farmhouse suite with bedroom, bathroom, huge sitting room with open fire, games (chess, cards etc) room, lobby etc all to ourselves. Anna, our very exuberant Italian hostess made us feel welcome and cooked ?????... read more

Today is the day of our big Umbria trip. First we are going to visit the hill town of Todi. Todi is known for its picturesque medieval streets and commanding view of the surrounding Umbrian countryside. We met the busses at the Piazzale degli Eroi, a 5 minutes’ walk from our residence. We filed in, many hung-over and still drunk from their first Saturday with alcohol freely available. There were three busses and me and my roommates picked one as soon as possible since it started to drizzle. Our ride up kept me captivated. The city of Rome is not like American cities. Most American cities have an urban core surrounded by miles of suburban sprawl and finally 10-20 miles out from the city center do you see your first farm. This is not the case ... read more

Geo: 42.7802, 12.4085This morning we head off from Lugascello on the first of our week's worth of road trips. We zip off, well actually casually motor off, in our Ford diesel family wagon. I'm not actually too impressed with this as I had envisioned the four of us in a red convertible, scarves blowing in the wind with our Chanel sunglasses on. Not quite. We are rugged up in jackets, scarves and socks looking like tourists. Also the GPS doesn't work so I'm appointed navigator, G is driver. Good luck!Anyhoo, we arrive in Todi mid morning. It is another hill town but we come across an antique market and mum gets yet another present. She would love this place! We pretend to view the sights, ie cathedrals and piazzas, but then find a lovely restaurant with ... read more

Buona sera from Umbria Italy! I have not had much luck accessing the internet in the last week. In Rome- I was too sleep deprived- or too busy seeing the Vatican. In Bari, where we stayed the night before we began our bike trip, I did not try, and at the 3 “hotels” we stayed at during our bike trip, only one “truly” had an Internet connection—and that one had the one computer—for all of the guests at the hotel! We are having a great time in Italy. We are travelling with our long time friends Jim and Lacey Marchetti. Jim is an Italian speakers- with his family coming from Cuneo in the Piedmonte region of Italy. In Bari we will meet up with our friends the Ritelli’s, where we will do an organized 6 day ... read more

Yesterday was pretty rainy here in Roma... and true to "when in Rome..." I stayed indoors and enjoyed some time relaxing. I guess Romans melt in the rain, but I certainly didn't mind a day of sleeping in. Later that evening I got to see the Colosseum. It was beautiful at night, and so calm because not very many people decided to venture out to see it after the rain. I also had my first gelato, some sort of chocolate hazelnut I think, which was amazing! Today we took a trip to the hill town, Todi, in Umbria. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. It was a bit rainy and cold, but the sun started coming out in the afternoon and made for a fantastic view. After wandering around a bit, we went to a fantastic 5 (or more? ... read more
