Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

Pisa/Florence Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence
Pisa/Florence We started our car trip from Volterra to Pisa. When we arrived there we went to find the Leaning Tower of Pisa! but it took almost half a hour to find it. I was so surprised, I thought it would it so much bigger! Jarah and I pretended to hold up the tower. After that we headed to Florence, which is in Tuscany. We checked in at our hotel called Hotel Royal and then wandered the streets of Florence to find some food. We found a super market and bought some food. Over the next two days we had a [View Full Entry]

Got a sneak peak of our target as we approached the playground.
Day 5: Today was very laid back. Didn't do much besides revisit neighboring attractions and hung about the numerous gathering spaces and piazzas. We went back to Piazza Signoria where there's a museum inside. It exhibited a lot of paintings and some sculptures but I must admit, although many of them are pretty impressive, I'm not a big fan. I think if I took the many art history classes that UW offers I would appreciate them much more. For dinner we picked up bread, cheese, salami, and bologna which is probably as good of a dinner I've had throughout the trip. [View Full Entry]

The famous tower of the Piazza delle Signoria as seen from MY WINDOW. Aw yeah.
Day 3: The train ride to Firenze (Florence), Italy was short and sweet, only about 2 hours. This time finding our hostel wasn't so bad because we had a map and directions. The 10 minute walk from the train station to the our place was a site-seeing tour of its own, as we recognized churches and monuments peaking out from above and between neighboring buildings. I couldn't wait to get settled in and explore! The location of the hostel is almost directly in the center of town so one could virtually go in any direction and find something to see. Stunning Florence Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence
Known here as Firenze, Florence is completely charming. My camp site was right next to the Piazza Michelangelo lookout which had the most stunning views of the town (especially at night!). One of the things I like best about Florence is that, like Verona, a lot of the building styles co-ordinate well together. It's possible to imagine what it would have been like hundreds of years ago. Apparently this is a city of crafts and there are a huge number of shops and stalls selling gorgeous leather goods (mostly bags and jackets), and a number of artists sketching and painting in [View Full Entry]

Art!

For some reason I had it in my head that the leaning tower of Pisa was in the middle of a small square. Was I ever wrong! It's actually in the middle of a LARGE and very green square which it shares with a church, a baptistry, an artistic cemetary and a whole host of street vendors. I also didn't know that you can actually climb the tower (for 15 euro mind you). I'm so glad I did it though! The view from the top is one of the best I've seen. You really feel that you're in Tuscany once you [View Full Entry]
