Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

I checked out of my hostel in florence today at 10. Headed to the train station to hop on the train to the beach town "Rimini." When I got to the train station, every train headed north was delayed a minimum of 3 hours. This was due to a train derailing. The train that derailed was going in the direction of Rimini (same train tracks). If I had not gone out last night and decided to take the later train, I may have been on the train that derailed. I took this as a sign to stay in Florence for one [View Full Entry]

Also den besagten Mittwoch war ich dann total im Eimer, weil mich am Dienstag meine Ammerikanischen Nachbarinnen Andrea und verflixt, hab ihren Namen schon wieder vergessen, zu ner Geburtst [View Full Entry]

The weather has finally started to agree with me! After a solid month of clouds, rain, and cold, I can finally say that it is too hot to wear pants. Shorts are a necessity, and no matter how much walking I am doing, thongs (this trip has been an immersion in Aussie culture, and they call them thongs not flip flops) are being worn. My skin tone is no longer a sort of opaque cream, and I can finally dress how I do back home...such a relief! ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I would like to start the debriefing o [View Full Entry]

I woke up this morning after dreaming about Lorenzo de’ Medici. He would be invited to my private dinner of my version of history’s most intriguing figures if the dinner were ever possible. It must have been interesting to have lived in Florence at the height of his reign during the Italian Renaissance, yet terrifying as the Florentines fell under the power of Savonarola after Il Magnifico’s death. My interest in these figures continues to heighten as a devour books that conjure up vivid images of great time in history. Soon I will be strolling through the streets of Flore [View Full Entry]

June 1 First day of class!!! Our first class is Italian at 9 am. We find our way. I think it is so cool how you can't even tell it's a school since the building just looks like another apartment building! Ah the city. We find our class and sit closest to the window to catch the breeze coming through. We met this girl May who lives upstairs from us, super nice. We have a pretty interesting group of kids in my Italian class... But I was excited to start a new language and not be bored in a language class [View Full Entry]

Inside the Duomo Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence
Today I took the trek up the 463 stairs to inside the cupola of the Duomo. It was the best exercise, physically and emotionally I have ever gotten. The views of Florence were amazing. I also got be right next to the beautiful fresco inside the Duomo. Amazing. I spent the rest of the day wandering around the city, at a much slower pace. It only took the steps of the Duomo to knock the New York walk out of me. [View Full Entry]

Ciao da Firenze! Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence
Greetings from Florence! Mom and I are having a blast during our whirlwind tour of Italy. So far we had three days in Rome, one in Assisi, and now we're in Florence. Day 1 in Rome included the Colosseum, the Forum, the Palatine Hill, the other Imperial Fora, and the Circus Maximus. I was super confused and probably scared my mom by being utterly incapable of finding an entrance to the Forum. Yeah...last time I was there you totally did not have to pay to get in. Now you do. And that's lame. Day 2 in Rome was a Vatican extravaganza. [View Full Entry]

I am going to update what I've been doing soon but today around 4 pm I found out that a friend of mine passed away this morning at 2 30. He was only 17 yrs old and was shot due to a quarrel in a parking lot in Land O Lakes, FL. He is my best friends, Steven, cousin so it definitely hits home for me... I wish I could go back for the funeral but all I can think of is why someone would pull the trigger on someone else. It makes you realize how unsafe you actually are in [View Full Entry]

Bella Siena! Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Siena
Hey again! We thought we would update this from Siena since we had a minute. We have both fallen in love with Tuscany. When we arrived yesterday afternoon we sought out a wine bar that was highlighted in our book. It was a cute place, built right into the city wall. After a couple glasses of wine we went for a walk around the wall to get great views of Siena and the Tuscan hills. Then we grabbed some MORE pasta at a little place in an alley. The streets here are absolutely amazing. There is no rhyme or reason to [View Full Entry]
