I said this about many places but we really didn’t intent to go to Italy to go skiing. The closest we ever got to plan a visit in Italy was Kellie's wish to rent a villa in Tuscany and learn cooking from an Italian Nona.
Anyway I convinced her that December is not the best time to visit and sit in a cold villa so this plan was off the table.
The reason why we went to Italy was me not planning anything (see that's a good thing) and being really surprised that after I told friends that I will be in Stuttgart sometime in the New Year the reply was “but we won’t be”. Wasn't a good conversation until he mentioned that they go skying and that there is a chance of some space being available in the hut that they rented. That in a nutshell is how we scored an invitation to go skying in Italy.
It was great. I love skying and I never do enough of it especially when you can combine it with a beautiful ski hut in the middle of nowhere (and I mean nowhere the next “town” was 5 km away and
even the locals referred to it as remote), good friends, great weather and lot of alcohol then its a beauty.
To sum up the whole week weather wise: Blue Sky, cold but warm in the sun. We couldn't have asked for more.
We went to a smallish ski resort called
Gitschberg which had enough slopes to keep us occupied. One of the favourite ones was the run from the top of the mountain down to the base station. A cool 5km run. Obviously if you have such a run you need to know how long it takes to get down and we did it in the beginning in less than 8 minutes. Jens and Martin did the whole thing in the end with an average! speed of 50km/h…
A mall excursion another day brought a friend and I to yet another ski region called
Kronplatz which with over 100km of slopes should be considered bigish. The main attraction here were the black runs of which the longest was a cool and muscle hurting 5km. Its not one of those black runs which are mainly easy and then there are one or two tricky bits in them it
The first beer
many more to come is more or less non stop black. Man did my legs hurt in the end.
While I was busy trying to do as many km on black runs as I could Kellie was busy polishing her skying skills and signed up for ski school. She really wasn’t to confident the first day and a little temper tantrum and being close to tears convinced her. She stayed for 4 days and I am still not sure if that had to do with her needing that much help or with the Italian ski instructor... She did pretty well as the only class she could join was the advanced class as the instructor was the only one who could speak English. To her own astonishment she made the third place in the obligatory race that follows every ski course.
The nights were spent in the ski hut as après ski was not an option with a 5km walk back. Drink driving is not a good idea in these regions (actually everywhere) as the slopes are steep and the roads are extremely narrow. Didn’t stop us to have our own Après Ski in the hut. Don’t want to say much about it
but we managed 5 bottles or Schnapps and Jägermeister and 4 crates of beer between 6 people in a week....
All in all a great week and I propose to build some high mountains closer to Sydney.
PS: Jens, Micha. Vielen dank nochmal das ihr uns herumchauffiert habt
