Another early start to get some washing done so we can visit Noto. We also plan to Skype with family back in New Zealand. The time difference makes it perfect for us. Unfortunately there is a regional Internet problem so we miss the opportunity of catching up. Hopefully there will be another chance in a day or two. Noto is about 40 minutes drive away. We decided on the pretend autostrada on our journey there, perhaps a more adventurous route on the way back. Arriving in the hilltop town Jane takes us through the middle along very narrow streets. It takes some time to find a park. It is nearing lunch time and as expected the locals are filling the streets in their little cars in an effort to get home. We find a large empty ... read more

Sept 27 Day 6 Off our own homemade breakfast meats, cheeses.... We where off to the east and after driving through Modica we headed for Noto. This town was a series of one way streets and we had heck of a time finding parking as it seemed to market day. Eventually we travelled past a parking lot and had to go around again to find it. We found our way to town center and the main was closed to traffic for about 8 blocks. Looking like it might be a nice day, we thought we might need umbrellas, so from a street vendor we bought a 5 euro umbrella. At our first stop we went to a church called San Salvatore which looked like it had just gone trough a major reno and was going to ... read more

We left Marsciano Dec 4 for a 20 hour train ride through Rome and Naples to Sicily. We rode the train through the night. At about 5am we reached Villa San Giovanni at the toe of Italy. i watched in wonder as the train we were on was broken apart and loaded onto a ferry to cross the water to Sicily. Apparently Italy wanted to build a bridge but it would be too costly and with the constant seismic activity in the area it would not be worth the expense so if you want to cross from the mainland to sicily whether on foot, by car, or on a train you have to take a ferry. This crossing however made our train two hours late. We passed by mount etna and eventually made it to the ... read more
