Well, today we have went by train from Palermo på Milazzo in the morning, it was quite cheap, 3,5 hours, only 10 euros. Then we took a ferry for 15 euros (Ustica Lines) to Lipari and when we arrived the hotelstaff were waitng for us with a car and they drowe us to our hotel in Canneto. When I got into the hotel, (Hotel Amarea) I thought we had taken the wrong hotel, because it was so beautiful, almoast like a luxury hotel with big rooms and a beautiful wiew over Canneto and the mediterranean sea. We dropped our bags and went down to the beach, the water was freezing cold so went up a hill and it was really beautiful. See you tomorrow! ... read more

We've arrived on Aeolian Island of Lipari! Getting here was slightly easier then last year, yet still awkward. We said goodbye to my Aunty Lidia in Reggio Calabria, and left my car behind at the airport. I still haven't payed the 38 Euro fine from Napoli as the post office cant process the payment as i dont have a residential address here in Italy! We then caught a Hydro foil from Reggio to Lipari. The boat trip was only ment to take an hour and a half, italian time, which turned into a stomach turning 2 and a half hour boat trip to Lipari! We were more then glad to get off the boat! Then the hotel then didnt have our booking! They double booked, so we stayed 3 nights in the initial hotel and ... read more

Lipari is the largest of the eight Aeolian Islands, spending 5 days here was not enough! Main reason for visiting were ancestral ties. Nonno left here in the late 50's, when a majority of locals left the island, effectively allowing the locals who stayed on to become wealthy in the soon to hit tourism boom of the Aeolian Islands! Looking at this island from a tourist perspective you think '”why the hell would you leave a place like this for Australia?" but i guess times where different then! Getting here was defiantly a task. Leaving Napoli on a hot local train, (with a bag full of panini’s) it took ages to cross over onto Sicily from a ship which chugs a train over strait of Messina from San Giovanni. Local Transylvanian gypsies attack the train with ... read more

We headed north from Taormina for about 25 minutes to the port town of Messina. The Ustica hydrofoil station and ticket office were easy to find and were just a short distance to the Europcar dropoff point. We arrived in the town of Lipari at the Marina Lunga after a relatively calm 45 minutes crossing of the Straits of Messina. Our hotel, Villa Meligunis was conveniently located near the other marina, Marina Corta. After breakfast we would walk the short distance (150 meters) to the marina where we met Giancarlo and boarded the Alice, a comfortable 8 meter motorboat. For the first two days, we toured Lipari and Salina by boat. On day three we took a break from the water and visited the Duomo and Museo Archeologico. On the fourth day we were back on ... read more
