Lipari was one of our favourite places when we visited in 2005. I am glad to say that we still love it as much as we did back then. We booked a place with a nice pool, so we could relax in between sight seeing activities. We also did a lot of the things that we did back in 2005, but this time we showed Nathan and Craig what we loved about the Aeolian Islands so much. Lipari is in the middle of the chain of islands, which Craig noted looked like the Hawaiian Islands on a map. That is because they are also volcanic in origin. Two of the islands have active volcanoes on them too. Stromboli is the most active and in 2005 we were able to climb to the top to see the ... read more

We sleep in and spend the morning lazing around the pool. It's a bit hazier today and more humid. We've read on TripAdvisor that the number one thing to do in Lipari is visit the Chiesa Vecchia church in Quattropani on the other side of the island. We trudge down to the port again. I head to the ferry office to buy our tickets for the ferry to Milazzo in Sicily for when we leave tomorrow, while Issy goes to look for bus tickets to Quattropani. I don't know too much about the ferry service, and as I wait nervously in the queue I begin to think that maybe I should have looked into it a bit more carefully before we left home. I hope there is a ferry tomorrow. TripAdvisor said that the bus services ... read more

We sleep in and miss breakfast, which might be a good thing. At least now I don't need to worry about trying to sneak things out of the breakfast room for Issy. I'm hungry, and then I remember that I only had a packet of biscuits for lunch in Panarea yesterday because the queue for the sandwiches was too long. I then only ate two of the four energy bars that I bought to have for dinner on the rim of the crater at Stromboli, because I was too mesmerised looking at the view. Issy says that because we didn't do anything yesterday, today we need to go for a long walk. I'm not entirely sure I agree that I didn't do anything yesterday, or that I need to do more walking, but I'm hungry so ... read more

I head down to breakfast alone. Issy's asked me to bring her back a croissant. There's a large sign on the buffet saying that all food is to be eaten in the restaurant, and there's to be no takeaway. I wonder if I've got the courage to smuggle a croissant back to the room, and what they might do to me if I get caught. I casually walk over to the croissant table, and sneak one into a serviette. I'm pretty sure that no one saw me. I hope that Issy's grateful for the enormous risk that I've just taken. The booking site for the hotel said that it had a shuttle transfer service to take guests to and from the town, so I ask the receptionist when this leaves. She isn't very friendly, and she ... read more

Today we travel to Lipari, which is one of the Aeolian Islands off the north coast of Sicily. As we pack I again notice that there's a tin on the desk in our room; when we arrived here Issy told me that it was full of tobacco. I ask her if she wants to take it with her. I'm not sure why; she doesn't smoke. I open it, and find two lollies in the bottom. It seems that she told me it was full of tobacco so that I wouldn't open it and find her secret stash, which she's now nearly finished eating. I'm clearly blindly trusting of her. She says that she can't believe that she made me believe that the hotel had given us a tin of tobacco, which now that I think about ... read more

We decided to spend our last three days in Italy on the small volcanic island of Lipari, part of the Aeolian Islands. We found a beautiful apartment in the Sea Rose Villa, right near a small beach, and at the edge of the delightful main town of Lipari. There are about 10,000 residents here year around, but that doubles in summer. While there are quite a few tourists here off season, it's still peaceful. I've been able to run in the hills, swim and look at volcanoes...heaven! I visited the archaeology museum one morning, and was amazed the literal layers of history under my feet. Ancient peoples settled here in about 6000 BCE, and prospered in the obsidian trade, as Lipari has one of the few obsidian deposits in Europe. Mainland tribes took over, the Greeks ... read more

23 August 2012 We have spent a very busy few days in Milazzo. This was the opportunity to resolve the diesel leak in the reserve tanks and the puncture in the Kevlar sail. Poseidon Marina in Milazzo was “perfecto” for such an occasion. Not a smart-tarts marina with rip-off prices but predominantly a marina to support the Poseidon dive centre with the requisite facilities. In two and half short and very busy days we had everything back up to speed, bar the watermaker - which will need specialist loving from an HRO rep in the Balearics or Barcelona. Both Salva and Salvatore (it would appear that the Italian for engineer is “Salvatore” – as all we met were called the same thing) were fabulous. It was not at all what we had expected. They ... read more

The morning following our amazing trek up to the top of Stromboli was already proving to be sweltering. It was nearly 30° C at 7.30 a.m.! We needed to get a hydrofoil back to Lipari where Carmelina wanted to recee a walk. "The other path has fallen away into the sea", she said! So at 8.30 a.m we were gliding smoothly across a millpond sea towards Panarea, our first stop. It was going to take one and a half hours to get to Lipari. We had just missed the bus for Acquacalda, the beginning of the walk, so Carmelina managed to find a taxi-driver 'friend' who could take us to the trailhead. Timing was a bit tight as we had to be in Vulcano at 4 p.m. to catch the boat back to Cefalù. The drive ... read more

Geo: 38.4674, 14.9539One train and two ferries, making for a long day to get to Lipari - even worse, the hydrofoil from Messina to Lipari was a very rough ride, making it impossible to read, let alone sleep, as we were jostled about. Seasickness was also a big problem, with a number of passengers becoming ill enough to request the staff to provide plastic bags for their vomit. Luckily, neither of us got to that point, but who knows what may have happened had the ferry ride been longer than 2.5 hours ...It was a pretty bad sight, but still not quite as bad as what you would see in Albanian furgons - I remember a particularly bad ride from Saranda to Vlora, up through the winding curves of the Llogara pass. To visit or walk on the Aeolian Islands is something you can do all year round. This time of the year - early June - it's idyllic. You may or may not know that King Aeolus, the ruler of the winds, was the one who gave Ulysses, from the Odyssey, a bag of winds to blow him back safely to Ithaca. Unfortunately for him he fell asleep on the job and his crew opened up the bag, thinking it was full of gold, and in punishment, the whole fleet got blown back to the islands. Not a lot has changed on these islands since Aeolus' days, where he spent most of his time feasting and banqueting with his wife and children. Today most people who visit spend their time relaxing in the small bars, sipping aperitifs ... read more
