Arrived in Sicily today flying into the Catania airport via Rome departing initially from Chicago. We had one hour for our plane transfer in Rome. We did a quick walk through the airport and through immigration to get our passports stamped. We made it to our gate with about 25 minutes to spare. We checked in and then took a shuttle bus to the plane. Both flights were uneventful. Chicago to Rome was about 9 hours and then Rome to Catania was just over one hour. We landed in Catania and headed for the baggage claim area. Our suitcases were not there. This was not unexpected due to the short transfer time in Rome. We made our way to the missing bag/lost and found area and after waiting for several other groups of passengers submitting claims. ... read more

We spent the past weekend homebound, as on Saturday we were recovering from our all-day outing to Agrigento the day before; and on Sunday the weather was positively wretched, with rain showers, wind and chilly temperatures throughout the day. So when we awoke to clear skies this morning, we were anxious to relieve our “cabin fever”. Our goal was to walk a section of Taormina we’d not yet explored, and then to stop by the tour agency office to see if it might be possible to arrange for a last-minute excursion to Mt. Etna before we leave. Unfortunately, the agency has not received enough reservations to satisfy its minimum requirements to conduct the tour. Just below the Corso Umberto stands the 14th century Palazzo Duchi di Santo Stefano, a masterpiece of Sicilian gothic architecture, with characteristic ... read more

Geo: 37.8253, 15.2667We were a little worried that we would not make it to Mt Etna, which would have been a shame as it lays claim to being the largest active volcano in Europe. There is only one public bus a day that goes to Etna and the tours we looked at were all full. My Hail Mary pass was a couple emails to people who have private driving companies. It turned out to be a great call because we scored a nice rate on a car/driver for 4 hours for a very good price.Giovanni met us in front of the hotel after breakfast and drove us over. The language barrier prevented significant communication, but he was kind enough to pull over at good photo ops. When we got to the parking area about halfway up, ... read more

Geo: 37.8253, 15.2667I got a tolerable night's sleep that included a little wakeup around 3am local time so I ended up talking to Mike on Facetime-- kind of fun.  Apparently the rose bushes that I ordered several months ago decided to show up in time for someone else to have the fun of planting them. From what I understand, trying to unearth rosebushes from their nest of packing peanuts can be a painful process. So far, I'm not a huge fan of Italian bus drivers.  Generally when I travel, bus drivers seem to recognize that I'm clueless and could use a little help, specifically, a shove or a shout when my stop comes up. These guys are 0 for 2 so far.  They don't seem to care if I get off where I need to.  I got ... read more

Todays gelato flavour - GMB and GLB :Amarano(Cherry)Delicious with real pieces of cherries in it What an absolute cracker of a day dawned this morning and although our room faces east the sun took a while to rise enough to shine brightly into the room. There was still a haze out to sea so the islands off the coast which include Vulcano,an active volcanoe on which people live and you can also stay at various hotels. However overhead was a beautifully fine sky,and it looks like today will be the best one weather wise that we have had since arriving last week in Italy. Showering looked like it was going to be a challenge this morning so Gretchen went first to suss how best to handle it.She emerged suggesting I would have fun in there but not ... read more

I woke up early! I was warned that several rooms would be leaving at 6 am, and they were noisy but it was ok, just part of a B & B! I got up and walked along the waterfront. Mt. Etna was postcard perfect, so I have some nice shots. What a surprise to see a huge cruise ship pulling up to the pier!!! Ugh. Buses lined up, tour boats ready, all the restaurants and bars open, and a very friendly talkative guy cleaning up the street messes from the night before. He pointed out Etna, Castelmola, Taormina, etc. etc. in Italian, but I understood perfectly! I returned to my "villa." Breakfast this morning was the same as yesterday except fresh mozzerella was substituted for the spinach. I decided I would picnic on the beach today, ... read more

5 am: awoke to catch the 6:45 am ferry to Sicily. My internet contact Kyle said I was to be at the port promptly at 5:45, so I WAS! I got a primo seat at the front of the observation deck, with a round table and 2 club chairs, 5 feet from the glass windows. What a beautiful boat, only 15 months old, felt like a cruise ship… 2 decks, one a club section with a center staircase worthy of a bride, the other full of regular passengers like me, 2 deli bars, and a deck for cars. I got a ham and cheese baguette, grilled, and a diet coke for breakfast. 70 euro for the trip from Malta to Catania. We arrived on time, at 8:30 am. I continued the trip on the (ferry) bus ... read more

For Easter, Allison and I had planned a relaxing day lounging on the beach. Our Italian-only speaking inn keeper had told us that breakfast was served until 10, so we woke up about 9:30 to take advantage of the free food. However, Allison woke up not feeling great/wanting to sleep more, so I went down to brave the breakfast room on my own. I walked downstairs and into the room where he indicated we should come for breakfast, and found a cute little dining area, nicely decorated with lots of paintings of beautiful nature scenery. There were about 15 tables, all set, and a buffet with plates, glasses, butter, and jam displayed, but the lights were off and there was no food (or people) in sight. I walked into the little kitchen off the dining room ... read more
