Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

Tuesday night in Rome I spent trying to sleep through the demands of the never-ceasing traffic through the open window, and the snoring, restless turning and conversational Spanish of my nine room mates. It was an experiment in travelling cheaply, and all good experience! The frustration of having my new, unused travel towel stolen - my own fault for carrying such a desirable, light-weight, micro-fibre piece of kit in the first place. And leaving it unattended on my bed for at least a minute. It didn't put me in much of a mood to make friends with my bedroom fellows, but [View Full Entry]

We left our overprıced hotel and made our way to the Barı - Patros ferry. We had quıte a waıt ahead of us but who really mınds waıtıng when the weather ıs clear and the temperature ıs hot? We sat on the only portsıde ın Europe not to sell water, ıt took half an hour of searchıng before we found an expensıve vendıng machıne to quench our thırst. As normal, after sıttıng besıde the bıke we soon had a small crowd of excıted onlookers. Our new frıends for today were a bunch of BMW [View Full Entry]

Leaving Italy
'Work'
Anyone remember this?

We had read that the Amalfi Coast had one of Italy’s most wild and rugged landscapes so we decided to go for a drive and take a look. We drove through the rough streets of Pompeii before taking the motorway south to Salerno and turning off to the coast. The Italians definitely drive to a different set of rules to other people, similar to the Chinese in that if there is a gap, they will fill it. They also have a loose interpretation of certain road rules; red lights are not compulsory, the centreline (where it exists) is a guide only [View Full Entry]

Saturday, 22nd November, 2008 Plan for today, Acireale to Cosenza. The wind really got up last night and things were banging and clattering around the Hotel. We were both awake early, so got up and started sorting ourselves out, as we have a long day. Pat went down to breakfast and then we paid our bill at reception and left the Hotel just before nine o'clock. We went for the Autostrada up to Messina, which was very light with traffic. The winds got stronger as we approached Messina, although the sun was shining and the temperature on the car said 22°C. [View Full Entry]

Bari to Polignano a Mare Europe » Italy » Puglie » Bari
Bari- to Polignao a Mare-- Backroads of Pulgia- In typical fashion, Ellen tried Gin and Tonic, Wine and then her first glass of Grappa, I then spent a good portion of the early morning hours becoming intimately famaliar with the bagno (particularly the toilet)- as I got rid of my poor choices for about 6 hours from both ends of my body! For those that have travelled with me, I seem to have this experience at least once every time I travel. I will say no more about that for now……………Bari is a Port City in the South of Italy. Made it to Pulgia! Europe » Italy » Puglie » Bari
Ciao! We made it to Pulgia Italy--and are about to start our day 3 of bike riding! So far no saddle sores! Internet access has been challenging...as the definition of internet access is one computer per hotel! Plane flight from SFO to Dulles went great! I sat next to a well behaved--and thin young lawyer in coach and jim stretched out his legs in business class. At Dulles- we got lucky and upgraded me to business class- as they still had seats available! We had a great flight to Rome....and with the help of medication--I do feel like I actually slept [View Full Entry]

From Bari to Duress Europe » Italy » Puglie » Bari
we woke up in our lovely air conditioned private room, much to Cats happiness as she is heat sensative and likes to sleep in an igloo.... We got a Taxi to the station with Joe and Matt (the back packs) and a huuuge box of excess stuff to be sent back to Cats. After posting the box which wasn't that hard after locating the post office which was somewhat more complicated, we got onto a train and heard an announement in Italian, to which all the Italians looked a bit peeved with and started to move, deciding it was nothing to [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone from Southern Italy. We are presently in Bari on the southeast coast, waiting for our ferry to Greece (Patras) tonight. Since our last post we headed out of Tuscany and down to Rome. The drive from Siena down was a little interesting as the van developed a bit of an electrical problem which wiped out our 5th gear/overdrive, windscreen wipers, indicators and other ancillary electrics. We limped tensely down to Roma and found a nice rural campground on the outskirts of town on a Sunday night. The campground operators put us onto a local mechanic who we aimed to [View Full Entry]

Andria to Bari Europe » Italy » Puglie » Bari
Drove to Bari Italy, had lunch and Lisa got hit on by a very Italian waiter. Boarded ferry around 5pm and then watched tons of trucks BACK onto the boat. Had a great dinner in a surprising nice restaurant on board. Planned out our route to Egypt and met some other travelers on board. TRIED to sleep on a couch then the floor then a chair….. Did not matter what you did, just could not get comfortable for couple of hours of quality shut eye. Trivia- we don’t know the actual number but our guess is 9.9 out 10 Europeans smoke [View Full Entry]

Since the statue of David’s site was closed on Monday, we decided to try to get a couple of quick shots before leaving. Big mistake. The streets were crawling with tourists and students. There were at least 4 to 5 hundred people waiting in line for David so we decided to skip it and head south. After a couple hours of driving, it started to rain hard and there was a bad accident on the freeway. We sat waiting for the involved cars to be moved off the road for about 45 minutes. Lisa decided she was going to drive to [View Full Entry]
