N Workshop Field Trip

On the last full day of my workshop we were treated to a tour. I choose the farm nitrogen tour and got to visit a dairy farm and a field trial site.

The average farm in Italy is very small only 9.5 hectars and their growing season is year round. For these reasons farming is very intense. We were told that dairy farmers make almost nothing when they sell their milk but the farmers we visited had good business sense and theyinvested in milk dispensors were anyone willing to drink unpasterized milk can buy it for a euro a liter. This is a very good price for milk over here trust me! The other thing the farmer and his family have done is to make gilato ice cream with they sell. Gilato (I maybe spelling it wrong) in Italy is the best thing in the world. I had some in Mexico last year but it just doesnt compare to here and the stuff we had at the dairy farm was the best Ive had so far. Betweeen the heat and the taeste I have to be careful or I will spend all my money on gilato and not on lasting memories.

On our tour I met up with a group from Perugia and when I told them that I was heading there after Florence they offered to take me out to some of the places which are more difficult to get to without a car. I havent decided if I will take them up on the offer yet but for sure I will stop and visit them while Im there. After all traveling is not just about the places you see but the people you meet too.
