Background: Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the city-states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.

TRAVELING LA VALTELLINA Europe » Italy » Lombardy
Ciao, tutti. I have a couple of questions concerning la Valtellina. I am planning on going there on vacation in the winter. I would like to know how is the climate in MOrbegno, Sondrio, etc. Around the valley. Much snow, much precipitation in the winter? How is the temperature? ALso how is the weather in the summer, just in case I changed my mind and go there visiting in the summer. Thank you PS. Is it true that the lake como's warm winds influence many cities of the valley? [View Full Entry]

.... sorry Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Bergamo
It has been a dreadfully long time since I last wrote, I find it is getting harder and harder to find time to write, and it has been literally impossible for the last two weeks since I have been on vacation without a computer. The result of this lack of blogging is that I have a TON to write about and am afraid some things wil get left out, but thats life I suppose. The night before our last day of school it absolutely dumped snow making the following day devoid of school for all of Bergamo. It was amazing, I [View Full Entry]

Special Edition - Milano Bike Show and All Blacks! Being so handy to Europe here, and with the Milan Bike Show on in November, a tempting opportunity presented itself to catch up with a Kiwi motorcycle dealer mate, and to see all the latest models unveiled (and the bikes)! Malcolm has been going for years and I’ve always thought…”Wow, one day….”, - and so it became a pipe-dream… On Jude’s insistence I checked out airfares and accommodation and soon discovered the All Blacks were playing Italy in Milan the same week!! I found an awesome airf [View Full Entry]

The 'hood

Saturday evening found me walking the bustling pedestrian only streets with Pietro and Chiara (my last host brother and his girlfriend) and Giulia (my current host sister and closest friend here). The Center looks flat out gorgeous at night this time of year, over every street there are thousands of twinkling little lights. Holly shapes over some, stars over others, all coming together to create a magic feeling. Pictures are coming soon, I promise. So, as we strolled the streets, peeking in store windows and generally enjoying the evening, we came across a small square where there were th [View Full Entry]

SO SORRY I haven't written in so long, time just got away from me completely, I didn't even realize it had been so long!! I will start by saying... I BOUGHT SHOES!!! They are the most beautiful heels, I love them. They are a sort of suede like material, all black, pretty tall, with sort of looped ribbon of the same material down the front. I wore them to a birthday party in a private room by one of the nicest bars in the city. It was fantastic, I felt so... posh in my beautiful shoes and little black dress! At [View Full Entry]

It was somehow ironic that we would be going to Italy of all places for a weekend of Kiwi sporting pride. And going to Milan to watch my first ever All Blacks match on a cheap Ryanair flight (£16 return), it seemed inevitable that I was going to bump into some fellow Kiwis that I knew. And sure enough, when I got off the bus from the airport at Milan's central station, I saw my old cricket mate Jacques, who I hadn't seen in years. Jacques, just like us, was here for the match and we had a bit of a [View Full Entry]

Milan and Berlin Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Milan
One weekend in Milan in Italy In late winter and early spring this year mum and dad went on two shorter trips on which they let us come along. Each of these only a weekend long so we didn't have time to see very much. But if we put these two trips together we think we have enough exciting stories to tell to make it worth writing. On the first of these trips we went to Milan and Bergamo in Italy. We were so happy to go back to Italy because we had so much fun last time we were there. [View Full Entry]

Malian sightseeing Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Milan
Saturday 14.11.2009 Day 30 Malian sightseeing It was over cast and a bit cold today so we decided to take a day off from the show. We had a bit of a look around where we are staying and then looked more into buying a car. It is a lot harder than we thought it would be! We were going to buy a car in Italy on Monday use it the whole time we are in Europe but getting it registered and insurance when you are not a resident is hard and we cannot prove residency or have a fixed address.
