Last Friday there was another storm while I was at school. It was warm enough that the large windows in the classroom were all open, but it was pouring and there was thunder and lightning. The lightning was relatively unremarkable, just flashes of blue light because of our vantage point, but the variety and intensity of the thunder was fantastic! I made notes of me three favorites: 1) It was a really sudden and intense boom, really loud and with no little rolling noise to warn you, made everyone in the class jump out of their skins. 2) It sounded exactly like three really loud shotgun shots being fired in a row. 3) This was my favorite, it sounded exactly as you might expect it to sound if the sky fell. It started like the ... read more

It seems the longer I wait between blog entries the more daunting it becomes, and the more like a chore; but thats odd because really, once I sit down and start writing one its really rather fun. I'm really happy to hear from all of your comments that you are enjoying this blog as much as I am and I hope it continues to entertain. Love to you all! So, where to start this time... English class! "Why talk about English class, your in Italy?!", you might ask. Because, its fascinating the things a native speaker takes for granted. For example, how often have you thought about which past tense verbs ending in -ed are pronounced like in "talked" (kt) and how many are pronounces like in "played". Or how we never really pronounce the "e" ... read more

So! I just finished a dinner (and desert) created by Christina's host mother. I say created because it was a masterpiece. First was long-ways slices of eggplant, must have been baked, with parmesan cheese and tomatoes between. It sounds simple but man was it incredible. Then second was a sort of torte/keish. It ad a hand mad crust and cover that my host mom explained was called "Pasta Brisa", a french name. It differs from the crust of a sweet torte (called "Pasta Frolla") because it has no eggs or anything but butter, flour, and a little milk. It was filled with a keish sort of thing, made with eggs, cheese, zucchini, and a little lemon; absolutely fantastic. Then, for desert, there was a torte with homemade crust and homemade fig jam inside, along with ... read more

Well, this is going to be very difficult for two reasons. Firstly, I have a ton of things to write about. Even though it was just one week. I'll put it this way, if this last week were a glass, it would be filled to the point of overflowing with a thick, rich, liquid, probably purple in color, delicious, but with a slight sourness in certain sips. The second reason is that I already started writing about it when firefox decided to suddenly stop working and I lost all my progress, very frustrating. So, here I am again, about to write a novella to try and explain the experiences I had in 6 days, knowing it wont come close to really explaining anything, and having no idea where to start. *sigh* Alright, I'll do it ... read more

It is now Sunday evening here and my one free day per week is winding (unfortunately) to an end. When my head hit the pillow last night, it was filled with the blissful knowledge that I would be able to sleep in late. When I was awoken this morning at eight by Christina, I admit that I more than a little reluctant to get up. I got up anyways and slowly the realization that I was going for a hike in the foothills of the Italian Alps drifted out of my sleep fogged mind to jolt electrically through my body. It was better than coffee in its effect (though I had a cup anyway because it's fantastic here). I was up and dressed for exercise in minutes. An hour drive later and I was shouldering ... read more

Now, I know I just wrote yesterday, but today was simply too wonderful to not write down. I suppose I could write it in my diary, but then I could very well forget to put it in my next blog or simply become too lazy to type it, so here it is: The happiness of this day actually had some origins in an evening a few days ago, starting with a puzzle. Not just any puzzle, but one of a tiger and its cub. This puzzle had the number 1000 written defiantly on its box and sat atop a shelf above the other board games, symbolic to me of it's arrogant nature. So it started with a puzzle, a puzzle that a certain 14 year old said was "impossible" (in a rather thick accent), and ... read more

Yesterday was my first day of school here in Italy! the school is set up way differently here, instead of the students moving classrooms, the teachers move. I haven't decided which I like better, but I miss the coziness of my old classrooms, the room here seems so... empty. Since I don't move from class to class I don't get the feeling of being in a gigantic school, only when I go to the buses after and it takes 5 very large, very packed buses just to thin the crowd do I notice. The other people in my class are really nice, and when I said i was from California everyone got very excited. I am at a linguistic school, and as such i am taking both French and Spanish along with Italian. This makes ... read more
